Summary
In a divided country desperate for unity, two sons of South Carolina show how different races, life experiences, and pathways can lead to a deep friendship - even in a state that was rocked to its core by the 2015 Charleston church shooting.
Tim Scott, an African-American US senator, and Trey Gowdy, a white US congressman, won’t allow racial lines to divide them. They work together, eat meals together, campaign together, and make decisions together. Yet in the fall of 2010 - as two brand-new members of the US House of Representatives - they did not even know each other. Their story as politicians and friends began the moment they met and is a model for others seeking true reconciliation.
Here, Senator Scott and Congressman Gowdy, through honesty and vulnerability, inspire others to evaluate their own stories, clean the slate, and extend a hand of friendship that can change your churches, communities, and the world.

Inspirational true story!
The authors are two South Carolina politicians who are close friends, but this must-read book is apolitical. J. D Jackson narrates the part written by Tim Scott while John McLain narrates the words of Trey Gowdy. Very highly recommended!!

Love + Faith + Compassion = Lasting Friendships
Genuine friendship in politics is almost taboo in today’s political climate. More than that, the friendship these two esteemed gentlemen enjoy is truly transcendent. Admittedly, in most cases, I completely disagree with their political views. However, I can appreciate hard work, genuineness, faith, & civility when I see it. Those are qualities fully displayed in the lives of these two respectable men. What impresses me the most about Sen. Scott & Rep. Gowdy is their persistence in maintaining faith & friendship in a wholly toxic environment. If we only had their story as an example, it’d be a benchmark on the power of friendship which supersedes race, ethnicity, religion, or status. Thank you gentlemen for this inspirational piece of literature!

A ray of hope!
These men are who I want governing our nation. Not because they are Republicans, but because they embody the spiritual faith that made us great. May they be the spark that returns us to the leadership that our constitution and building edifices speak of.

The heart of the matter
Initially skeptical that two conservative politicians could really bring a message of “unity through determined effort,” I was ultimately convinced they are addressing the heart of the matter for America’s greatest challenge. Unification. If you hesitate to hear/read the book because you disagree with their politics, you are precisely positioned to benefit from their message.

A beautiful story about open hearts and the power of listening and respect. We need more of this in our country, our politicians, ourselves!
