Summary
Die Erzählung von der schicksalhaften Liebe des schönen Meerfräuleins Undine zu dem jungen Ritter Huldbrand von Ringstetten, den das Wüten der entfesselten Elemente zwingt, längere Zeit in der einsam gelegenen Fischerhütte am Ufer des Sees zu verweilen, wo die ungebärdige Undine bei alten Fischersleuten lebt. Der Ritter verliebt sich in die schöne Waise, die seltsame Beziehungen zu den Elementen unterhält.
Durch die Heirat gelangt Undine endlich zu einer menschlichen Seele, und aus dem wilden Naturgeschöpf wird eine liebende - und leidende - Frau. Denn als Huldbrand ihr untreu wird, verschwindet Undine in ihrem Element, dem Wasser, um nur noch einmal aufzutauchen und Huldband in einer letzten Umarmung zu ersticken.
