Richard Wagner (1813-1883) komponierte jede Menge wuchtige und beeindruckende Opern mit Elementen aus Heldensagen; auch deshalb werden sein Werk und die Person Richard Wagners bis heute kritisch betrachtet. Einmal hatte Wagner, das Künstlergenie, mehr Geld ausgegeben, als er verdiente und wurde beinahe verhaftet. An der Dresdner Hofoper erlebte er als Kapellmeister seinen musikalischen Durchbruch. Die Oper "Tristan und Isolde" wurde 1865 in München uraufgeführt.
