Summary

Summer, 1585: Sir Francis Drake prepares to embark on an expedition by royal commission to cross the Atlantic and seize major Spanish ports, diverting King Philip of Spain’s treasure to Queen Elizabeth.

When a ship captain is brutally murdered, and Drake’s life threatened, it becomes clear that someone plans to destroy the expedition before it begins. Giordano Bruno and Sir Philip Sidney hunt for the killer, but are they being lured into a trap?

I Felt This To Be The Weakest Of The Books.

In this book, Giordano Bruno‘s life becomes involved with that of Sir Francis Drake, his brother, Thomas & the expedition to attack the Spanish ports.

Drake has a fleet of ships commissioned to cross the Atlantic & seize major Spanish ports. They would then capture Spanish ships & treasure, for Queen Elizabeth.

Once again, we see Bruno teaming up with his friend Sir Philip Sidney.

The problem that I found with Book 4, was that the number of sub-plots undermined the story, as opposed to complementing it.

Giordano's adventures continue

Giordano Bruno is a wonderful charater in this book and in this series of books.
The settings are wonderfully painted and the plot twists and turns endlessly.
Definitely worth the time.

It grew on me

When I started listening to this I felt rather swamped in verbiage and the narrators Italian accent came across a lot like Bela Lugosi playing Dracula... As the plot and characters developed I became hooked and even started looking forward to the next installment. It developed an atmosphere of Elizabeths England, humour and a certain amount of tension which kept it travelling along at a decent pace - would I try another? Yes probably - will I ever get used to the narrators Italian? probably not - but as the book went on, I think he actually added to the charm...

An enjoyable listen

It took me a little while to get into it but once I did I enjoyed it start to finish. it's not a gripping story and in times a little predictable but none the less a well written story. I will in the future consider listening to more

Historical Mystery

This is the 4th Giordano Bruno novel to date and the era is 1586 and the area is Plymouth Hoe, talk is of England on the brink of war with Spain and who should be in dock but the one and only Sir Francis Drake and his Armarda. While in dock a murder has taken place on Drake's own ship and that means he can't sail till someone is caught and justice served. On their way, Sir Phillip Sidney (Queens Envoy) and Giordano Bruno (who is Italian by birth and a Theologian scholar) to Plymouth and Sidney hopes to set sail with Sir Francis for the new world and has not informed the queen, however when they get to Plymouth and introduce themselves to Drake he really does not want another rookie on his ship, but news of this murder prompts Sidney to tell Drake that Bruno can find this killer, thus hoping that will get him and Bruno a ship's passage Bruno, however, does not have sea legs but does put mind to matter in these Elizabethan novels and eventually Bruno gets his man well sort of!.
Characters are well thought out and the description of the lay of the land at that era great and if anybody prefers the audio addition the narrator Lawrence Kennedy is brilliant. Much thought out novel and a very different from the normal modern versions of whodunnits, no fingerprints no DNA just what the mind can make of it with what's on offer at the time. These can be read as standalone's but the odd reference from a previous book can pop up. I thoroughly enjoyed and it's very different from the norm.
