About this listen

Lucas Davenport and his daughter, Letty, team up to track down a dangerous scientist whose latest project could endanger the entire world, in this latest thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

Gaia is dying.

That, at least, is what Dr. Lionel Scott believes. A renowned expert in tropical and infectious diseases, Scott has witnessed the devastating impact of illness and turmoil at critical scale. Society as it exists is untenable, and the direct link to Earth's death spiral; population levels are out of control and people have allowed disarray and disorder to run rampant. While most are concerned about deadly disease, Scott knows that it is truly humanity itself that will destroy Gaia. It's only by removing the threat that the planet can continue to prosper, and luckily, Scott is just the right man for the job...

When Scott then disappears without a trace, Letty Davenport is tasked with tracking down any and all leads. Scott's connections to sensitive research into virus and pathogen spread has multiple national and international organizations on high alert, and his shockingly high clearance levels at various institutions, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory, make him the last person they'd like to go missing. As the web around Scott becomes more tangled, Letty calls in her father, Lucas, help her lead a group of specialists to find Scott as soon as possible. But as Letty and Lucas begin to uncover startling and disturbing connections between Scott and Gaia conspiracists, their worst fears are confirmed, and it quickly becomes a race to find him before the virus he created becomes the perfect weapon.

New characters and all the old gang too. Brilliant book. Why can’t I put less than 15 words in the submission. So annoying

Best yet

I have listened to every one of the Prey Novels. I have never not enjoyed one, but some are more compelling and stick in the memory more than others. This will be one of them!
Excellent writing and brilliant narration. Listening to the previous book it was necessary to get used to a new narrator, following the sad passing of Richard Ferrone. With this book, Robert Petkoff has really settled into voicing the characters, and as a British Listener, I have to complement him on his excellent British accent, for one of the main characters.
This is an excellent book. John Sandford at his absolute best. I hope very much that Lucas & Letty will team up again in future novels, along with Rae, Barb & Hawkins. Love the dynamics between all of them - extremely well written. Although we still need some more of Virgil's input too!!

One of the best Prey Novels ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a good cat-and-mouse chase story in the Davenport world. Lucas, Letty and the others racing to stop a mad scientist before he can spread his world-threatening virus. The threat and jeopardy is well done and realistic and keeps the story going at a good pace without relying on ridiculous twists or coincidences to save the day .... mostly.

The narration is great. Of course it's not RF but Petkoff is a talented guy and his handling of the different characters was excellent; even the British accents weren't too cringey. (That said, I'm not a huge fan of the new British character, hopefully he won't become a regular.)

My only slight complaint is that the plot used by the evil scientist to spread his disease seems a little over-blown; you wonder why he wouldn't just sit in an airport and spread his germs around randomly before anyone even noticed he was missing. Spread the virus on a self-service screen in a busy McD's and you'd probably infect thousands of people before it was cleaned!

Anyway, put that to one side for the sake of the tale and this book's a good way to spend some time in the company of the Davenports.

Good Davenport story, well narrated

The whole thing is preposterous and far fetched so unlike his previous books. I find the Letty character unbelievable and the narrator is poor. Richard Ferrone knew how to deliver the story, this guy reads it like a teenage romance. Given up on it and returned the title. Something I never thought I’d do with a John Sandford book. He appears to have swallowed the climate change garbage wholesale.

Mr Sandford has lost it

I’ve followed LD for nearly 30 years and am a huge fan of John Sandford but this is not great. A poor story line is padded out and filled with lots of irrelevancies.
And Letty acts totally out of character which is hugely disappointing. I really was hoping Hawkins didn’t make it thru!
And whatever happened to the real narrator?

Not up to JS’s usual high standard!

This is my 2nd attempt trying to finish this book. I'm less than 3 hours into this book but am not sure I'm able to finish it, which would be a waste of 1 credit. Not sure what's going on with JS. I have read and enjoyed all his LD and VF novels - a great fan, but I have to say that I've been very disappointed with his last couple of books (this one and the next one with VF, which I managed to finish without much enthusiasm). From what I've listened to so far, this book is so superficial and unrealistic, it almost reads like a YA caper. Lettie gets sent to London to find out about missing scientist and in less than a day, discovers a nefarious plot that could potentially decimate half the world's population, after interviewing only three people with the help of an MI5 agent. A phone call would have achieved the same result. Both agents very trusting and indiscreet. Life histories exchanged over iced tea. Her boss accepts her findings without question and sets about to save the world from a cataclysmic event. So far, so unbelievable. OK, Brits are great tea drinkers, but iced tea?? Don't think so. New narrator - accent not bad, but not sure about some of his pronunciations.

Rubbish?
