Summary

From Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews, the deeply personal story of his lifelong obsession with strength—and how, after looking for it in all the wrong places, he finally found it

Terry Crews spent decades cultivating his bodybuilder physique and bravado. On the outside, he seemed invincible: he escaped his abusive father, went pro in the NFL, and broke into the glamorous world of Hollywood. But his fixation with appearing outwardly tough eventually turned into an exhausting performance in which repressing his emotions let them get the better of him—leading him into addiction and threatening the most important relationships in his life.

Now Crews is sharing the raw, never-before-told story of his quest to find the true meaning of toughness. In Tough, he examines arenas of life where he desperately sought control—masculinity, shame, sex, experiences with racism, and relationships—and recounts the setbacks and victories he faced while uprooting deeply ingrained toxic masculinity and finally confronting his insecurities, painful memories, and limiting beliefs. The result is not only the gripping story of a man's struggle against himself and how he finally got his mind right, but a bold indictment of the cultural norms and taboos that ask men to be outwardly tough while leaving them inwardly weak.

With Tough, Crews's journey of transformation offers a model for anyone who considers themselves a “tough guy” but feels unfulfilled; anyone struggling with procrastination or self-sabotage; and anyone ready to achieve true, lasting self-mastery.

Touching, intelligent, laugh out loud funny

I loved this book as it gave an honest insight into Terry’s life, his struggles, his pain all with refreshing honesty and humour. It rang true to my experiences with my Dad and I’d recommend it to anyone, but especially men with testing relationships with their dads.

Awesome

This is a brutally truthful and therefore exceptional book by a man who truly gets it. If this doesn't resonate with you then I'd argue you're just not thinking about things properly or being completely honest. There's a "right" way to live and this book outlines that way in many, many areas. Something and someone to actually aspire to.

Good listen and book

This book is a good and would recommend if you are a fan of Terry Crews.
I would recommend the Audio book as i find with Autobiography's they are better told by the person rather than reading it my self as i feel they add little of them in telling there story.
Only negative was i wanted him to talk more in depth about his movies but the story he did tell i still found interesting.

True toughness

Engaging story about a life that could’ve turned out so very differently. There are lessons within the pages that everyone can learn from. All delivered without preaching. Not sure this book would appeal to anyone who does not have any empathy.

It's Terry Crews. You love em, but he's missing it

It's Terry trying to make sense of race and kind of there and further than most sadly ever will be. But then the entire book is racist and race obsessed while he preaches about how non racists we should be, then proceeds to divide people by race. So he seems to still be missing a bit of the point.

Like reading 5 books in one!

Terry's writing style is super cool. In each of the 5 parts, he talks about the traumatic events of his childhood, how those manifest as a young adult, and how he overcomes. Then tackles another area of his life in the same way. Nothing is off limits in this book. He tells hard truths, and names names. I could not stop listening. As a middle aged white lady, even I could relate as the child of an alcoholic and a narcissist. I imagine there are some who will not love his views on racial equality (as opposed to supremacy) but I thought it was such a healthy, nuanced world view. He makes it clear that so many things are complicated in life and not described with a quip or sound byte. I absolutely loved this book and after hearing him read it, would love to share a meal or cup of coffee with him!!

Bravo!

Terry Crews’s and my backgrounds could not be more different but the “I’m not good enough” and “I’m going to show them” mentality are exactly the same. I can relate to every experience and feeling that he described. This book is entertaining, uplifting, and enlightening. I highly recommend this book.

What a phenomenal book!

"Amazing" gets overused, but this book truly is. A real, raw look at a man's journey through hardship, hard times, and hard luck and what he learned--and most importantly, what he has un-learned--from that experience.

In a society and culture that simultaneously distort and decry masculinity, this should be required reading for all men over 18. A masterclass is the power that only comes from true vulnerability, and the strength that only comes from gentleness.

Terry narrating the story truly makes it jump off the page (as it were). It felt less like a book and more like listening to a friend tell his story.

It's a hard story, and a tough story to hear. And it provokes tough, challenging inner conversations for the reader. But it's worth it. I can't recommend this highly enough, and I'm grateful to Terry for his vulnerability and for telling some tough truths.

Terry tells an engaging story

Thanks for sharing, Terry! I liked your narration and openness with stories good and bad. I was surprised to even gain some new mindsets on grief, trauma, success. Great listen.

Past, Present & Past

The story and performance that Terry Crews interacts was exceptional. However I do think the story goes from what is his past to a more recent event and then back to when he was a child and this could confuse or possibly lose focus on the point in the chapter. Other than that, it’s very motivational and inspiring.

Thank you

Terry Crews,

have been at my wits end in life and really depressed and feeling isolated and alone. But your story makes me feel like I’m not alone. I was praying to God please give me something different to listen to. And I had decided to listen to this book while riding my bike 40 miles for the first time in over 15 years. Thanks Terry Crews

a must read

Not meant to be cliche. Terry’s story feels like mine. A Gen X’r who has grown and can see the middle ground; how racial divides further oppresses the human race via gender, economics, ethnicity, abilities and identity. How addictions of all kinds tear at the fabric of our families and lead to violence. How every human beyond basic survival needs spirituality, charity, courage, honesty, self worth, openness, willingness and opportunity to work hard for something.

Amazing story

Thank you Terry Crews for being a voice of reason and talking openly about the pain and recovery that made you the “Tough “ man that you are today. After hearing your story I’m like wow God is at work despite our human attempts to push him away. We are all better people for knowing more about Terry’s journey. May God continue to Bless the Crews family.
