THE MILLION-COPY BESTSELLING PHENOMENON

This is the story of Sam and Sadie. It's not a romance, but it is about love.

When Sam catches sight of Sadie at a crowded train station one morning he is catapulted straight back to childhood, and the hours they spent immersed in playing games.

Their spark is instantly reignited and sets off a creative collaboration that will make them superstars. It is the 90s, and anything is possible.

What comes next is a decades-long tale of friendship and rivalry, fame and art, betrayal and tragedy, perfect worlds and imperfect ones. And, above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love.

One of the best this year

My heart sank when this finished, such a brilliant story, expertly read. Strongly recommend. 10/10

Gripped despite not being into gaming

Reading the blurb, I really didn’t think this would be for me, but the character development, story lines, and the descriptive writing meant that I was hooked early on! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, and would recommend it to anyone - whether you like gaming or not!

Overrated Book

I though the story was ok but really dragged the last couple of chapters.

The characters, especially Sadie was horrible. Really self centred, unlikable

Very good book

It was a good book to listen to, it was narrated well and flowed nicely. My only negative was that I thought it could have been about 100 pages shorter. Worth a listen!

Stunning

One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Touching, playful and creative. The author is just genius!

A good story, gratingly told

Maybe it’s because I work in the games industry but I found myself wanting to dive deeper into the characters themselves rather than the constant cheesy game dev cliches. The characters are not particularly likeable but I felt they were very unique and interesting, particularly Sam. The ending felt a bit drawn out but the lead up did enough to keep me reading. Ultimately this is quite a sad story and perhaps not quite what I was expecting but it was enjoyable enough!

Moving story without cliche’s

Loved how the book tackles complex relationships around a different context of game design. Even though I have no interest in games it still resonated and enjoyed how the characters progressed. Didn’t love the narration- felt a bit one dimensional and robotic but got used to it. The switch of narration threw me but it was very clever way to change perspective.

Engaging, heartwarming and devastating

This is such a fantastically written book, story craft at its absolute finest.
I really enjoyed the narration, and although I was initially thrown by the sudden change in voice for one of the chapters, I actually think it was really effective.
