About this listen
Small-time stoolie Jake "The Spinner" Jablon made a lot of new enemies when he switched careers from informer to blackmailer. And the more "clients," he figured, the more money - and the more people eager to see him dead. So he's greedy but scared, and he turns to his old acquaintance Matthew Scudder, who used to pay him for information back in Scudder's days as a cop. Scudder's his insurance policy - if anything happens to "The Spinner," Scudder can check up on the people who wanted him dead. No one is too surprised when the pigeon is found floating in the East River with his skull bashed in. Blackmail's a dangerous business. What's worse, no one cares - except Matthew Scudder. The unofficial private eye is no conscientious avenging angel. But he's willing to risk his own life and limb to confront Spinner's most murderously aggressive marks. A job's a job, after all, and Scudder's been paid to find a killer - by the victim…in advance.

Really enjoyed this book!
I enjoyed this book, o thought the characters were believable, and the story was well written.
I also liked the narrators voice.

Not a fair cop
Gritty, well written, well crafted no nonsense. Ex cop left to deal with the last wishes of a murdered friend in his own peculiar way. Very Harold Robbins'sy in style and content, but not as racy; representative of novels of the time.
The excellent narrator put style and tension into his characterizations. Well done. ENJOYABLE

Great narration lifts the story to a classic.
I love listening to audio books in bed. Despite this being a gripping account convincingly brought alive by the narration of Alan Sklar, I inevitably fall asleep. Consequently I am forced to return to the beginning each night like some trapped inside their own “Groundhog Day”.
Previously read a few years ago I find these stories so relaxing and absorbing. Obviously set in a different era and very American they bring alive a New York when the PI was a substantial player. None, more so in my opinion than Matthew Scudder.
A brilliant tale of personal integrity where to keep his promise Matt takes on the mantle of a blackmailer to root out his ‘friend’s’ killer. Trouble is the hook was in three individuals and it is impossible to get to the truth without placing himself at serious risk of meeting a similar fate.

Tour de force storytelling
Between the author and the narrator this makes superb storytelling. Beautifully paced, superb evocation of place and exceptional characterisation.

Could not finish
I had to stop listening near the beginning due to fairly graphic descriptions of child abuse. Be aware

Not recommended
Story is so so, but the narration is interminable, that 'tough voice' should have died with Humphrey Bogart. Does anyone enjoyed it?

Time to murder and create
Did not enjoy the story, but the narrator has a nice voice and I need something to listen to when I work. Wouldn't recommend this one
