Summary

Award-winning actor, director, producer, and activist Kerry Washington shares the deeply moving journey of her life so far, and the bravely intimate story of discovering her truth.

While on a drive in Los Angeles, on a seemingly average afternoon, Kerry Washington received a text message that would send her on a life-changing journey of self-discovery. In an instant, her very identity was torn apart, with everything she thought she knew about herself thrown into question.

In Thicker than Water, Washington gives listeners an intimate view into both her public and private worlds - as a mother, daughter, wife, artist, advocate, and trailblazer. Chronicling her upbringing and life's journey thus far, she reveals how she faced a series of challenges and setbacks, effectively hid childhood traumas, met extraordinary mentors, managed to grow her career and crossed the threshold into stardom and political advocacy, ultimately discovering her truest self and, with it a deeper sense of belonging.

Throughout this profoundly moving and beautifully written memoir, Washington attempts to answer the questions so many have struggled with: Who am I? What is my truest and most authentic self? How do I find a deeper sense of connection and belonging? With grace and honesty, she inspires listeners to search for - and find - themselves.

Her story, told in a way only Kerry Washington can.

Fantastic writing from a fantastic actor, producer and activist. What a fantastic experience listening to Kerry sharing her story, covering the bits we already know, and the bits we would never guess, with such raw detail, emotion and strength. Fantastic listen, fantastic read, and looking forward to the Manchester date of the book tour.

Honesty is the best policy

Having been a fan of Kerry’s work for a while and being in awe her being one of the first women of colour I had seen playing characters with a sense of agency and aspiration as opposed to the traditional stereotypical characters Hollywood reserves for minorities I of course wanted to read her story and understand how she has carved out a space for herself in such a complex industry. From the unexpectedly tense and emotional opening Kerry let us know straight away her journey was not an easy one. For a public figure who seems quite frankly PERFECT to the world I was not prepared to hear the deeply painful struggles she has overcome and though I could not relate to a lot of the things Kerry had experienced , I could relate to the emotions through the beautifully articulated stories Kerry Washington told. The amount of empathy and appreciation I had for her brutal honesty and openness surprised and warmed me as myself and many others I’m sure are extremely grateful to hear that even the most successful ,inspirational individuals like Kerry also face complex internal and external struggles . The whole book encouraged me to remember I’m not alone in my problems and to fight through my struggles as there is light at the end of the tunnel so thankyou Kerry Washington .

Gripping & Moving

A warts and all exploration into the true meaning of what we call family (in all senses of the word). Beautifully read.

So glad I took a chance!

I never watched Scandal (much bigger in the US) but had seen several films starring Kerry Washington, though knew nothing about her life. I like autobiographies, and this did not disappoint! For such a private person, this is a very honest and personal story. I would absolutely recommend. She narrates it perfectly, too.
