Summary

The lights are on at the Singleton vacation home on Lopez Island, Washington, illuminating the horror within. Scott Singleton, former NFL-star-turned-television-evangelist, lies dead. The bodies of his wife and four of their five children are found on the second floor, bound, gagged, and stabbed repeatedly. The oldest daughter was shot downstairs. And the police's main suspect - the property caretaker - has disappeared.

In her secluded vineyard home two hours away, Laura Gretchell is on edge. Her husband is out of town on business, and the children are understandably shaken. Laura tries to tell herself there's no reason to fear. Then the door handle rattles, and the real terror begins.

They're in her house, holding her children hostage, and Laura has only one option: Do exactly what the intruders say. But as Laura races to find the information they seek, she realizes that the enemies within her own home are only part of the nightmare. Because someone wants to keep the truth hidden at any cost, no matter how many more must die....

You never forget your best teacher...

Kevin O'Brien is one of those authors whose books I always look forward to and am always sorry when I finish it. This book is no exception.
This book grabbed me at the beginning. The publisher's summary gives more then enough detail to get you started.
This is a roundabout tale of religion gone wrong. You have con men, hit men, love, betrayal, misogyny and GREED. There's a frustrating protagonist and two antagonist. One makes you want to string him up and the other so childlike you want to protect.
Daniel Thomas May does a great job narrating.

This should be a movie

My first book by Kevin O'Brien... But definitely not my last.

From the first chapter of the book until the very last word of the book, there was not a single moment of boredom. When life's happenings kept me busy, getting back to my book was something I looked forward to. Trying to imagine what would happen next and who if any of the characters would ererge and what carnage would be left behind. How do you ever get a step ahead of evil and do you dare havein any hope of escaping a seemingly deadly ending for another family.

Indeed there are many evil people in this world that seem to have ice water in their veins. Motivated by love, lust, jealousy, thirst for power or revenge. This book as a little bit of it all.

But, a mother's love can be stronger than any of these motivators. And there really are good people who just happen to gross paths with someone evil and get caught up in my the path of their twisted minds.

I'll not give away a moment of the storyline.
Don't miss this one.

Chalkboard

The narrator in this book was listening to fingernails on a chalkboard.
There is just a few books that I just could not finish, but this book has made the list.
I could not get through this book, what I heard of the story was very good, I just wish that it was such an annoyance to listen to.

The first half of the story was good.....

The narration was awful - this guy just CANNOT do female or kids voices! It's like fingernails on a chalkboard. As far as the story.... I enjoyed the first half. After that it just kept falling lower and lower until it got to the point that I could have cared less what happened (in fact, I've quit the book at about the 75% point - just couldn't take another moment of either the narrator or the story). The back half is full of filler, which I can't stand - the words and descriptions used just to make the book a little longer. The story just got sooooo boring. This is unfortunate, as I've enjoyed some of Kevin O'Brien's other books.

another great book by Kevin!

I loved this book! it grabbed me quickly and held me! The end was great! Putting in the topics he did made the book holds your heart. (Trying to to give away any spoilers) I cried at the end though!
