Summary

The Wolf's Call is an action-packed fantasy epic from New York Times best seller Anthony Ryan, set in his Raven's Shadow universe.

Vaelin Al Sorna is a living legend. It was his leadership that overthrew empires and his sacrifice that saved the Unified Realm from destruction. Now he lives a quiet life, his days of warfare behind him.

Yet whispers have spread across the sea of an army called the Steel Horde, led by a man who thinks himself a god. When Vaelin learns that Sherin, the woman he lost long ago, has fallen into the Horde's grasp, he resolves to confront this powerful new threat.

To this end, he travels to the realms of the Merchant Kings - a strange land ruled by honour and intrigue. And as the drums of war echo across kingdoms riven by conflict, Vaelin learns that there are some battles even he cannot hope to win.

Great to return to Vaelin but an awful performance

The narrator absolutely ruins this story.

I'm a huge Anthony Ryan fan. Loved the original trilogy, which I read. Loved the Draconis trilogy. Read the first two and listened to the Audible version of book three. The narrator on that absolutely nailed it and great, distinct voices for each character.

Steven Brand, however, seems to have misspelled his last name. His style of narration is so utterly bland it completely killed this book for me. Even frantic battle scenes sounded like shopping lists at best. There was absolutely no feeling in his voice.

Furthermore, you don't get a fair assessment from the sample. The sample comes from the opening of the book which is the account of another character, much like the "intervals" in the original Raven's Shadow books. This means you are only hearing one person's recanting of events. When you actually get into the book you discover that Brand barely alters his voice for different characters. A lame, half arsed attempt at a northern lilt for Vaelin and occasional tips of the hat for one or two gruffer minor characters but for the most part you'll really struggle to decipher who is saying what during conversations.

Get the Kindle/paperback version and read this book. Don't listen to it whatever you do! It'll ruin it.

I really, really hope/strongly advise they get someone else to read the second book in the series. I'm genuinely disappointed Mr Ryan would sign off on such a dismal performance.

Wolfs Call

A return to the Al Sorna epic, Ryan hits form after the previous 2 in the series were disappointing, post his debut novel. recommended.

Great story, boring narrator

Fantastic story - love Vaelin and co. The narrator is very monotonous, unfortunately. I found myself tuning out often, and having to rewind and listen again :-(

another good book in keeping with the series

I enjoyed the audiobook though it would benefit from a little more enthusiasm on trying different voices!

welcome return!

Was great to return to this world. The action was excellent and the plot fast paced enough to keep me listening far beyond when I should have turned out the light. There's something about this authors characterisation that really appeals to me, across all his work and this lived up to that.
Looking forward to the next installment.

Wow, how did he do that?

I am so amazed at how Anthony Ryan was able to continue his trilogy in such great style. I was surprised at every turn. it was absolutely brilliant.

The performance was great. it was true, filled with emotion and immersive. Thank you for such a amazing experience.

Couldn’t stop listening

Yet another awesome listen, great story, twists and turns that kept me and are keeping me guessing. Great character that you cannot help warm to and dislike. Cannot wait for the final instalment. June cannot come quick enough
