Story
Troy has fallen. The Greeks have won their bitter war. They can return home victors, loaded with their spoils: their stolen gold, stolen weapons, stolen women. All they need is a good wind to lift their sails. But the wind does not come. The gods have been offended - the body of Priam lies desecrated, unburied - and so the victors remain in limbo, camped in the shadow of the city they destroyed, pacing at the edge of an unobliging sea.

The Salpêtrière asylum, 1885. All of Paris is in thrall to Doctor Charcot and his displays of hypnotism on women who have been deemed mad or hysterical, outcasts from society. But the truth is much more complicated - for these women are often simply inconvenient, unwanted wives or strong-willed daughters. Once a year, a grand ball is held at the hospital. For the Parisian elite, the Mad Women's Ball is the highlight of the social season; for the women themselves, it is a rare moment of hope.

Out here, even the lowest slave can secure a reversal in fortune. Amara has learnt that everything in this city has its price. But how much is her freedom going to cost her?

A story of love and solidarity among enslaved women in Pompeii
Interesting take on Women’s lives at the lowest level of Roman life. The sisterhood, the rivalry, the utter lack of choice. Sounds harsh, and in places it is, but the female characters and their relationships with each other really make it.

I only began this to find its suitability for my daughter as she bought a copy from a Xmas Fair
This is definitely adult content.
After I heard a few chapters I was hooked.
Not for under 18s
But I loved it

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Ancient Historical Masterpiece!
I purchased this book after hearing Elodie Harper’s interview about it on the Exploress podcast.
I was then immediately transported back 2000 years to the ancient streets of Pompeii, which I have been fortunate enough to visit twice in my life, so could really visualise scenes from long ago in my mind, particularly after remembering what it was like venturing into the brothel there and seeing how tiny the cells were and trying to imagine what life was like for the women who inhabited it.
I enjoyed how the author wove some of the ancient artefacts into the seams of the story, as well as famous quotations and some of the graffiti from the walls of the ancient city of Pompeii.
I was also very happy when the book ended with the knowledge that there are going to be two more books to follow this, as there is definitely more to explore with this story.

Great book overall
This review will contain spoilers.
I have always loved the Ancient world and anything Pompeii, so this book was an easy choice to buy. It brings Pompeii to life in a wonderful, yet absolutely heartbreaking way. There were several times when the story took me places where I felt like I had been punched in the gut.
I was a little worried that the book would end with the eruption of the vulcano, I am really glad it didn't. However, I did feel a little let down by the ending - it felt a little rushed and many things were left unfinished. Maybe that's just another testament to the reality of the book, since real life will always have unfinished aspects, but I was a little disappointed. It made me hope and wish and pray that there will be a sequel, as I feel like Amara has so much more to offer and so much more to do.

Highly recommend
Such an amazing read! I was gripped by this book for days and couldn't stop listening. It takes a few chapters to understand who's who and what's really going on, but after that it's an addictive read. I loved the she-wolfs, and I loved how the author never romanticised or belittled their trauma. Exploring the lives of the prostitutes of Pompeii is such an interesting angle, and I loved learning about the city's history, especially the graffiti. It deals with very tough topics - sexual abuse, assault, poverty, slavery, etc. - in a serious way but, at it's heart, this is a book about female friendship and solidarity.

Classic
This is excellent. There really is a collection of great novels recently based on the classics. This is set around Pompeii and is a quiet drama, mining what life would be like for a slave in the years before it was destroyed. It is almost like a thriller at the end and is well setup for a sequel.
