Summary

When life seemed its worst, Gresham awaited.

Julia Hollis’ opulent life in Victorian London crashes to pieces when her husband passes away. Worse, she is told by his bankers that he gambled away their fortune. Now the family’s hope rests on The Larkspur, an old abandoned coaching inn in the quaint village of Gresham.

Driven by dread and her desire to provide for her children, Julia decides to turn the dilapidated inn into a lodging house. But can she - who was accustomed to servants attending to every need - do what needs to be done and cope when boarders begin arriving? And then an eligible new vicar moves into town....

Heavily evangelical

Wonderful story but so evangelical that it should have been advertised as such. The Christian moralising is handled quite sensitively.
I can't imagine that Anglicans could so openly discuss and profess their beliefs. My parents and grandparents would have been horrified.
I'm an atheist and wasn't converted by this audiobook. However, it was interesting to listen to the beliefs of Christianity even though I think it's all mumbo jumbo.
The are a number of Americanisms which is irritating but this genre is increasingly written by Americans for Americans.

The innocence of the era. No swearing. Like going back in time.

I didn’t dislike any of it. I’m just an old fashioned girl and enjoy other authors such as Louisa May Alcott and Charles Dickens.

Religious story without warning

book starts normal and becomes religious without warning. I believe that preview should warn readers.

Beware Americanisms and Evangelising

A very pleasant story that rambles through the characters' ups and downs. One of my 'cons' is the conflict between the gentle, Victorian English narration of a story set quite clearly in England, but the use of words like 'stoop' and 'lunch pail' littering the telling of the tale were mildly distracting. Secondly, the relentless evangelising which seemed to gather pace as the story progressed really irritated me and brought out my inner atheist.

Widow of Larkspur Inn

I read this story for the second time after enjoying it a while ago.
Unfortunately there were sections missing which was annoying.

Beautiful writing and beautifully told.

I’m delighted to have found another excellently-written and read historical Christian fiction. I’ll definitely read more by this author.

Sweet, but a bit heavy on the American Christian ideology

Lovely story but the evangelical christian moralising is a little bit much for my tastes.
It was a sweet story, the American terminology clashes with the English setting but that's pretty normal for this sort of book I find.

If you enjoy christian literature then I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Easy listening and beautifully performed.

absolutely lovely

I thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish. All of the characters were so in keeping with the life in a 19th century village. It was read beautifully.
