Summary

El Diablo is in the details in this Latinx pirate fantasy starring a transmasculine nonbinary teen with a mission of revenge, redemption, and revolution.

On Mar León de la Rosa's sixteenth birthday, el Diablo comes calling. Mar is a transmasculine nonbinary teen pirate hiding a magical ability to manipulate fire and ice. But their magic isn't enough to reverse a wicked bargain made by their father, and now el Diablo has come to collect his payment: the soul of Mar's father and the entire crew of their ship.

When Mar is miraculously rescued by the sole remaining pirate crew in the Caribbean, el Diablo returns to give them a choice: give up their soul to save their father by the harvest moon, or never see him again. The task is impossible—Mar refuses to make a bargain, and there's no way their magic is a match for el Diablo. Then Mar finds the most unlikely allies: Bas, an infuriatingly arrogant and handsome pirate—and the captain's son; and Dami, a gender-fluid demonio whose motives are never quite clear. For the first time in their life, Mar may have the courage to use their magic. It could be their only redemption—or it could mean certain death.

An absolute delight from start to finish!!!!

Excellently written and perfectly narrated. I was hooked after just one chapter and binged the whole thing in less than 48 hours. Loved all the gay pirate dads, the seductive antagonist and deeply deeply appreciated the queerness throughout. thank you! will definitely be listening again!

Queer Latine Pirate Bruje

This is a beautiful adventurous heartbreaking and joyous story with complex dynamic queer and non-binary characters who aren’t apologizing for it. We need more of these stories. Can’t wait to see what Gabe Cole Novoa does next. Vico Ortiz did an amazing job embodying every character.

Phenomenal!

Ahhhh the way I am absolutely obsessed with this book. Vico Ortiz (Jim from OFMD) was the PERFECT narrator choice. Their voice entranced me the entire book; I think I'd happily listen to anything they narrate, but this book was an especially good choice.

The gender representation is EVERYTHING. I loved Mar and their gender expression, the way they described themselves as "mostly a boy, but not entirely." Dami's gender was also *chefs kiss* -- the way they could ebb back and forth in their presentation. The lore behind demonios and diablos and deals was so well fleshed out, and added so much to the plot. This book is a great example of "magic can only solve as big of problems as it is detailed". When it came time for magic and deals to have significant weight on the outcome of events, the reader understands the intricacies of them so well that it feels reasonable for magic and deals to accomplish what they need to accomplish.

I'm generally not a very visual person when I'm reading. I don't know if it was the author's writing, or Vico Ortiz's voice, but I could so perfectly imagine so many scenes. The ending had some twists that I wasn't expecting, which is always welcomed in a book! The twists made sense and I was happy with them (not always the case when there are twists lol).

Inscrutable Pacing, But Fun Story

I had a lot of fun, and I really liked most of it, but I felt like the pacing was inscrutable and I would have killed for, like, a little epilogue after that ending.

Ortiz does a mostly great job, but I sometimes felt like their commitment to Bas's voice led to some incorrect emotions on line reads.

Vico Ortiz is a treasure

This story is tender and brilliant.
Genderqueer Latine narrator, Vico Ortiz, brings the whole thing to life.

I am a white reader with no Spanish skills and an American accent. I especially appreciated hearing the Spanish pour from Ortiz’s narration in a way my own internal narrator could never have approximated.

I learned of this book from Vico Ortiz, who I follow online because of their role as a gender-non-conforming character on a 2022 pirate comedy on HBO called, Our Flag Means Death. Can’t recommend that show enough, but FYI it’s not a YA program, it’s for adults.

highly recommend

Vico's reading of the story is fantastic, and the story itself is engaging and so wonderful to have nonbinary and queer main characters front and center.

Sweet, fun, and meaningful

Very fun sweet and meaningful book about a magical Latinx non-binary queer teen pirate. I was really impressed with the story, the writing, the weaving-in of real history, and a touch of romance. And Vico Ortiz does a phenomenal job narrating the audiobook!
(Also, not even el Diablo what's transphobic or homophobic, which was very refreshing.)
