Summary

Following on from the events in A Zoo in My Luggage, The Whispering Land sees Gerald Durrell and his wife Jacquie travel to Argentina to collect animals for their newly established zoo. With rare insight and unique charm, Durrell pulls the listener into the tropical landscape of Patagonia, where he witnesses magical moments with penguins, seals and ocelots, and encounters a hilarious cast of characters, including a swearing parrot and a belching guanaco.

Absolutely superb

So often as fantastic book is destroyed at worst or spoiled at best by an unsuitable narrator, and there are the fantastic books that get there despite the narrator. BUT not this one, this one has the trilogy. Perfect narrator for a brilliant book. Please let it be so for the rest of the G Durrell collection 🙏🙏🙏

A very delightful book!

Gerald Durrell’s books about animals have been loved by me for decades and listening them is even more pleasant. His way of describing animals and people is very unique and his humour shines through every description. For a man who was a reluctant writer of books he writes brilliantly and his work should be recommended to everyone who adores animals.
The narrator fits very well and does an excellent job.

Sumptuous descriptions of a bygone era

Durrell's description of his South American adventures many decades ago is a delight to listen to. The presenter, Rupert Degas, was excellent and added colour and charm to the narration. I loved the ebb and flow of the story. One of Gerald's best books.

More wonderful adventures

I really enjoyed hearing about Gerald’s various adventures in Argentina, collecting animals for his zoo. The country and people, and the various landscapes and animals are wonderfully described.
