Summary
Mankind has ceded the night to the corelings, demons that rise up out of the ground each day at dusk, killing and destroying at will until dawn, when the sun banishes them back to the Core. As darkness falls, the world’s few surviving humans hide behind magical wards, praying the magic can see them through another night. As years pass, the distances between each tiny village seem longer and longer. It seems nothing can harm the corelings, or bring humanity back together.
Born into these isolated hamlets are three children. A Messenger teaches young Arlen that fear, more than the demons, has crippled humanity. Leesha finds her perfect life destroyed by a simple lie and is reduced to gathering herbs for an old woman more fearsome than the demons at night. And Rojer’s life is changed forever when a traveling minstrel comes to his town and plays his fiddle.
But these three children all have something in common. They are all stubborn and know that there is more to the world than what they’ve been told, if only they can risk leaving their safe wards to find it.

Fantastic adaptation
I read the book years ago after picking it up at airport, the created world and the characters were consuming. This dramatic adaptation enhances a great story, don't wait, buy it already!

Excellent Production worth two credits
This is for fans or people that like the graphic audio series. Listening while already very familiar with the story I loved every minute of the production going back to re listen to sections. This is very very well done and I look forward to the rest.

Listen with an open mind
Listening to this was a gamble for me.
This is one of my favourite book series and the unabridged version is narrated by Colin Mace, one of my favourite narrators. So, it was doomed to fail.
I started listening and nearly gave up, I kept comparing it to the unabridged version and felt that it didn't compete. I decided to listen to the end, however I decided to evaluate it in the same way I would evaluate the Lord of the Rings movies, as a different type of media that should be judged on its own merits. I'm currently listening to Book 1, Part 2.
I have scanned some of the one-star reviews and I can relate to some of the points they have raised, That said, I am glad I pushed these feelings aside and continued listening as this is an adaptation, and it does a really great job at bringing this series to life in a unique way that is really effective and enjoyable.
It will never replace Colin Mace's narration, and I will always feel that the unabridged version is superior, but that doesn't prevent this from being a 5-star performance that has me hooked.

Don't think I'll buy the 2nd installment
Firstly, the narration felt rushed. I don't know if this was due to time constraints or if someone thought that this would build excitement. If the latter, then the pace should only be quickened during the "action scenes" of the story. Having a fast pace from start to finish only becomes tiresome. A slight pause between sentences allows the listener to breath and take in what has just been said. Sadly I rarely felt that I had this opportunity.
The dialogue was often campy and over dramatised, without contractions. It didn't feel believable. People simply don't talk like that.
But the hardest for me to listen to was the terrible southern accents. I don't know why they had to be country bumpkins in the first place but if you are going to do a southern drawl then less is more.
In the end I attribute all of these problems to poor direction and honesty don't think that I can suffer through another 5+ hours. I'll spend my credits on something more enjoyable.

Terrible. I wish I hadn't bothered
I could make it past the 1st paragraph. The pace was completely out, the accents were ridiculous.
