Summary

William Wallace is accepted as an even greater hero than King Robert the Bruce; he is Scotland's most honoured son, a patriot unrivalled. Bruce fought for a throne; Wallace fought for the nation's freedom with nothing wanted for himself. Terribly, Wallace paid the price, as this story relates.

The Wallace: Scotland's Greatest Hero

The Wallace: Scotland's Greatest Hero by Nigel Tranter is very finest story. This is a story based on the life of William Wallace the hero of Scotland. This is finest story of Scotland's most honored son, a patriot unrivaled. At the end of the 13th century Scotland was suffering under the tyranny of the English and Edward Plantagenet. The eponymous hero swears to rid his land of their cruelty and to restore Robert the Bruce to the throne. Nigel Tranter has written many historical novels, mostly set in Scotland. It is a good read and even better if you happen to be Scottish. The tutored and encouraged by the heroic William Wallace, he determined to continue the fight for an independent Scotland, sustained by a passionate love for his land. This two-hour and fifty four minutes abridged audio version of also includes author commentary and an original narrated by Michael Elder. It creates imagination about the story through his bold voice that explains, capturing the essence of a story told by a writer who remains tender to the tragedy it contains. The 'William Wallace' this is outstanding story of hero of Scottish Independence.

Fantastic

Book was brilliant. Makes you hate the English even more.
This is the reason I can't wait for Scotland to an independent nation once again.

I wish it wasn't abridged.

Any additional comments?

Anyone who saw the film 'Braveheart' might like to read or listen to this book and find out what the story really was. Like hundreds, probably thousands, of children growing up in Scots ex-pat families I was taught much of our history through Nigel Tranter and had devoured his books by my mid- teens.

My parents met Mr Tranter several times and so I know of the lengths he went to get historical details as accurate as possible, given the passage of years. For me his history and storytelling was compelling, but his weaker area was the imagined personal relationships as between husband and wife.

Overall the books were wonderful and I learnt so much. I've bought this in the sale and it's good value, well narrated. You get a brief intro by the man himself as well. The overall score of 3 is because it has been abridged. The Bruce trilogy is abridged too, such a shame.

The only 2 reviews already here are poles apart, one very positive and the other calling it a dirge. I can't agree with the latter. I think we should be very proud of our history and our heroes, but history is made by human beings with flaws, like Wallace and Bruce, not by Hollywood inventions. Tranter will give you a better understanding than Mel Gibson.

Bloody embarrassing dirge

DO NOT BUY THIS AUDIOBOOK! There is a real lack of Scots history available in audiobook format but please do not waste a penny of your money on this 'braveheart' sentimental, nationalist crap.
Just for clarification I am Scottish and proud to be so but I am embarrassed by this book!
