Summary
The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically a member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have 11 days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded landlord just how wonderful they are...and all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home.

Sentimental Utopia
This book was entertaining, but we found it to be rather sentimental. The neighborhood that the author sets up is rather utopian, not realistic at all. For example, the children know everyone and wander all over the city, with apparently no fears of predators, creeps, or thieves. The only real evil having to move to a different city. This is less realistic than a Tolkien fantasy novel.
And while this isn't that big of a deal, we also didn't care for some of the language choices. For example, "fudge" is used multiple times as an expression of exasperation. Most people would easily substitute this word for a certain f-word.
And lastly, we aren't fans of junior high boys and girls dating and attending dances. Admittedly, we're a bit old-fashioned. We just think dating and dancing had better be left to older children.

Great book! I would read it aloud instead...
This is an awesome story and a great read aloud for Christmas, but this performance is not good. The narrator doesn't read the dialogue well at all. They don't sound like real people. Speeding up to 1.10 was a significant improvement.

Enjoyable read with heartwarming ending
I loved how the author developed the characters in this book. From the youngest child to each of the neighbors, each one was distinctly writing and fleshed out. I liked that the children weren't dumbed down. The ending was very touching and heartwarming.

A very sweet and entertaining story
The Vanderbeekers of 141st street is a sweet story with slight adventure and real feelings. My sister and listened to it via audio, and I feel it's directed towards a younger audience, say 2nd to 5th graders. The story was cute; with a few unexpected twists, while all the while sticking to the main theme: one family joined together by the near loss of their beloved home. I would definitely recommend giving this story a go.
