About this listen

The Sword in the Stone is the first novel in The Once and Future King, T. H. White's epic fantasy re-telling of the Arthurian legend. A cartoon adaptation by Walt Disney made it into an enduring favourite for the young.

Editor reviews

Wizards, boys, quests, and mixed-up magic. Sound familiar? Listeners can immerse themselves in the early years of King Arthur, known as a boy as the "Wart." Neville Jason easily takes the challenge of White's 1930s' language combined with myriad archaic terms of heraldry and chivalry. He delivers with fluidity and enthusiasm, rarely letting the listener wander off like King Pellinore, before another joust commences. The characters - blustery knights, compassionate mentors, or the sleepy hedgehog - are each imaginatively portrayed. The sly, merry humor is fully intact. Naxos's signature music heralds breaks between stories in this abridged Junior Classics edition. Hark! Well done.

Critic reviews

"Jason's narration reveals that he understands White's sense of humor. He plays up the comedy particularly well in the dialogue: he is remarkably adept at giving individual voices to each character." ( AudioFile)

Magnificent story, old fashioned but captivating and the children were utterly transfixed. Interesting characters that get your imagination running wild becoming fish, kestrels and other animals with an insight into how they might think and talk. It has a beautiful ending too. Both my children ages 6 & 8 loved it, as did we. I only wish there were more like it. Fully recommend for children and grown up children alike!

great book, wonderful to hear the original version of the story. Narration was great in general, though there are a few character voices which are a little difficult to get through
