Summary
“Susi Holliday is one of our best and most original creators of tense and twisty tales . . . Nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted in this brilliant page-turner.”—Ian Rankin
“Tense and twisty as all hell.”—Mark Billingham
“Tense, creepy and utterly brilliant…”—Jenny Blackhurst, author of The Hiking Path
“A brilliant concept, superbly executed. Susi Holliday is a master of her craft.”—Marion Todd, author of A Blind Eye
“On this street, lock your doors, whisper your secrets, and don’t trust anyone. Compulsive, clever and I couldn’t put it down.”—Louise Swanson, author of End of Story
Their neighbours welcomed them with open arms. Now they’ve vanished without a trace.
Anna and Peter desperately need to escape London for a fresh start. And they’ve found just the place: a perfect house on a perfect street in a perfect new development on the Scottish coast. But before they’ve even unpacked, they discover that the community they’ve moved into might be keeping secrets of its own…
Eager to fit in, Anna and Peter spend their first evening with their new neighbours, a couple who turn up on their doorstep to welcome them with open arms. But when Anna pops over the next morning to thank them for their hospitality, there’s no answer. The house is bare and unoccupied, and the neighbours have vanished without a trace. What’s more, everybody else on the street is convinced that no one ever lived there at all.
As she battles a growing obsession with the mystery, Anna finds herself becoming increasingly paranoid. She thought she’d escaped her own troubled past, but as the truth catches up with her, life starts to unravel. Maybe she’s not the only resident of The Street with something to hide…
Critic reviews
“Imogen Church's stylish narration builds the tension in this unusual thriller as it soon becomes apparent that no one is who they appear to be. Her strong characterizations of both male and female characters helps build a cast of larger-than-life individuals, each with their own secret and backstory. In particular, Church's neutral characterization of "The Diarist" helps keep the identity of this person hidden until it is revealed at the story's climax.”—AudioFile Magazine

Speed up the narration.
The narration is insufferable but was greatly improved by speeding it up to 1.2. Sadly the plot, writing and characters don’t have an easy fix. I like my crime fiction to be at least feasible but this story was just straight out ridiculous. I’ll be choosing a different author next time.

Oh dear, Imogen Church
I started reading then switched to audio as I was walking. Unfortunately the dreaded Imogen Church is reading, so it’s full of portentously drawled sentences that always sound sarcastic with bizarre intonations. The story is ridiculous and the characters have to be stupid not to clock what the Street is for. Anna is very unlikeable and deserves a comeuppance but it’s not her fault, she’s written that way. I think I is probably better overall if it is read rather than listened to.

Spoilt by the narration
Having read excellent book reviews I decided to choose this as my latest audio book for dog walking.. wish I’d read the book instead, the narration really spoilt this for me, particularly when she tries to add tension to the story. I hate to be negative but I will not be downloading any other work by this narrator.

The narration spoiled it
Really didn't like the style of narration, so the book was spoilt a bit. Maybe it deserves more.

A little predictable
I didn’t enjoy this book .
I found it quite easy to guess the storyline, it became quite obvious what the street was about quite early in the narrative.
The characters were not likeable or engaging & narrator’s style was extremely irritating to listen to

Couldn't finish it because of the narration
I've no idea how the story pans out, as I could only stand the narration for about 5 chapters, and then I gave up. Absolutely awful, if you fancy this book read it rather than listen, I implore you!

Awful narration, mediocre story
I bought this because Ian Rankin had recommended on cover……..narration is the worst I’ve heard out of hundreds of audiobooks, everything is exaggerated, accents are terrible and storyline seems so slow and drawn out….couldn’t finish it.

Intolerable narration
Why oh why is the narrator, Imogen Church, chosen to read so many audible books. So many reviewers, not just this book but dozens of others have made it clear that they can't stand her over theatrical style and over emphasis of different words. I'm annoyed I didn't check the narrator before downloading because I just couldn't carry on listening without tearing my hair out!!! 🙄

Oh dear…
Promising story, so I might read the actual book, but I had to give up on this a few chapters in. Narrator grossly overplays the cynical tone of the text; characterisation is crude, almost to the point of it being ‘funny voices’; various regional accents are attempted, none of them well and, for something set in Scotland, with a number of Scots in it, you’d have thought it would be wise to choose a narrator who can at least produce a plausible Scots accent of some sort. I’m afraid I’m returning this; it’s too irritating to listen to.
