Summary

Lorenzo and Lucia, both from peasant families, are planning their wedding. However, after meeting the villainous Don Rodrigo, the couple are forced to flee their village.

Their dangerous journey in exile takes them through one of the most dramatic eras in Italian history, filled with war, famine, and plague. Will they ever be able to find happiness together?

Critic reviews

"What makes these books special is that, brilliantly told by top-flight novelists, they are fresh, idiosyncratic and winning." ( Observer)

Short yet satisfying

Told with Eco's inimical wit and economy this medieval romance is given a modern flavour with references to current politics and both the paragons and villains are examined with cynical clarity. A lovely, light and well paced performance adds to the charm of this quirky tale and, as is often the case with Eco, the authorial voice following the main action prompts the listener to begin again and listen with new analytical emphasis!
