Summary

"The story touches on many familiar fantasy plot points—magic, an ancient language, an ability to commune with wild creatures, a climactic battle between the forces of good and evil—yet manages to be satisfying. It’s aided by a capable reading from Barber, who invests Rollins’ characters with a variety of British accents that help make each a distinguishable, real person."- The Providence Journal

This audiobook includes a special introduction written and read by James Rollins.

An alliance embarks on a dangerous journey to uncover the secrets of the distant past and save their world in this captivating, deeply visionary adventure from #1 New York Times bestselling thriller-master James Rollins.

A gifted student foretells an apocalypse. Her reward is a sentence of death.

Fleeing into the unknown, she is drawn into a team of outcasts:

A broken soldier, who once again takes up the weapons he’s forbidden to wield and carves a trail back home.

A drunken prince, who steps out from his beloved brother's shadow and claims a purpose of his own.

An imprisoned thief, who escapes the crushing dark and discovers a gleaming artifact—one that will ignite a power struggle across the globe.

On the run, hunted by enemies old and new, they must learn to trust each other in order to survive in a world evolved in strange, beautiful, and deadly ways, and uncover ancient secrets that hold the key to their salvation.

But with each passing moment, doom draws closer.

Loved it loved it loved it!

From the minute I started listening to this I was enthralled. I neglected my home my family and my job! I just couldn't stop listening to it. Towards the end I started listening less and less because I didn't want it to end. Thank you l!

I wanted to like this.

The story sounds like it was made for the sakes of making it. A lot of nice ideas but to be honest it was convoluted-too much too fast. I couldn’t keep track and eventually, although I listened to the end, I just glazed over and felt cut off and immeasurably bored. I literally can’t wait for my next book. Any book. Perhaps if the names were familiar I could put faces to them and actually remember who the heck he was talking about. But the action… oh please why wasn’t there time between one life critical moment and the next. It never settled down and just became unbelievable. Might be right up your street, just not for me.

Excellent narration. Brilliant storyline. I felt pulled into a world that ours could be and we are lucky it's not. Can't wait for next book.

Not My Genre

I pre-ordered because I have read or listened to all of James Rollins and love them. But......I only made it to chapter 21 and had to quit listening. I am sorry I wasted a credit on it. I am not saying that this is not a good book, I think it is for people whose genre is fantasy, I like James Rollins normal genre and am sad I could not get into it.

Great narration of a middling fantasy novel

Let me start by saying that Nicola Barber did a great job narrating! I really enjoyed her performance and it probably kept me engaged when the story began to feel repetitive. It started out strong but really began to drag in the last third of the book. I would recommend checking it out at the library instead of using a credit unless you are a James Rollins super fan or a fantasy genre addict.

Finished in 2 Days

I have read every thriller Rollins put out. When The Starless Crown came out, I didn't know what to expect, but I thought I'd give it a try because, "Hey, it's Rollins." About 30 minutes into my morning commute, I forget to get off the exit on the highway. By the end of the next day, I finished the audiobook (I speed up audiobooks; it's not difficult for me to follow faster speech).

What I loved about the novel — and I can't wait for the sequels, presuming there will be — is that it starts off as fantasy fiction but takes on an aspect of science fiction.

Overall, the storytelling, the narrating by Nicola Barber (loved the variations in pitch, inflections, and accents she gives the characters), the writing (more vivid than in his thrillers), and the character development are simply satisfying...like a "you just had hot chocolate while warming your feet by the fire after a very cold day" satisfying.

If you're into good storytelling, fantasy, fiction, action, and animals, you're not going to regret this purchase.

A true fantasy saga

#1 New York Times Bestselling Author James Rolling has a stunning new book in a brilliant new series. The Starless Crown is the first volume of The Moonfall Saga. It’s an epic story with rich world-building and wonderful characters.

Abandoned as an infant in the swamps of Myr, Nyx is mostly blind and needs help with her studies at the Cloister. Jace failed his fifth year, but assists Nyx in her seventhyear by reading her texts aloud and writing for her. Despite this handicap, she excels at her studies and the other students bully her for it.

Fleeing from one such barrage, Nyx is attacked by a Myr bat. The creature’s deadly venom brings terrifying visions of the world’s end. Nyx wakes nearly a full turn of the moon later, her vision restored and with the conviction that she has seen the future: Moonfall.

The Starless Crown is a true fantasy saga, where characters from different backgrounds collide. They grow “into a makeshift alliance, united by blood, grief, and purpose, all centered on one word. Moonfall.”

Not a fan. Struggled to finish.

Big fan on Rollins other books. This one was a big departure from his usual style. It went on forever and was way to slow. Disappointing ending not worth suffering through the "put me to sleep narration" to get to a even more boring ending.

Very Good with unique twists and turns

I wasn't sure how this book was going to go but I found that I really liked it. He did his normal good job of fleshing out the characters and making them interesting, but I found as I read more that I wanted to read more. James Rollins always a does a good job with his books. Definitely worth the read!

Wonderfully delightful

I was given the chance to review the ARC Audio of this book, and was enjoying it so much that I purchased the book myself in all 3 formats. The narration perfectly fits the book and made it all flow so seamlessly. Can't wait to continue the story. Another wonderful tale from one of my favorite authors.
