Summary

First came the days of the plague. Then came the dreams. Dark dreams that warned of the coming of the dark man. The apostate of death, his worn-down boot heels tramping the night roads. The warlord of the charnel house and Prince of Evil. His time is at hand. His empire grows in the west and the Apocalypse looms.

For hundreds of thousands of fans who read The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King's gift. And those who are listening to The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival.

Not for everyone

As you may have read tons of time - this is not a book for everyone. Having said that I can say I very much enjoyed it mainly because of the characters and the way how King manages to describe their inner selves with dialog and not with character descriptions like "he had brown hair, bla bla". I don't care how someone looks, I care about how they act in given situations and what they say or think - that in my opinion is what makes a character rememberable and not what kind of a shirt he wore. Anyways, exactly that is what King is doing and that's why I like this book so much. Also, I like the character development (Larry for instance) where he goes from being a really selfish $#"$%"# to a concious man. Anyways, if you like the book where the thing you'll remember later are the characters over the actual plot - you'll like this one!

DIDN'T WANT IT TO END

Amazing immersive experience. Now I've finished I feel like I've lost an old friend.
The masterful narration led me by the hand through this apocalyptic tale.
Go on, give it a go!

a great listen.

If you are like me, and like a long in depth story, then this is the book for you. It's a little slow to start but soon speeds up. The characters are very interesting and believable. This is the longer version of the book which is how the author originally intended it to be. One of his best. I didn't want it to end!

One of my favourite books

I read the stand for the first time at 14 and struggled to understand some of the concepts and undertones of this biblical epic. Having re-read and reassessed the book over the years this reading of it bought characters to life and put yet another slant on the Captain Trips apocalypse.

Definitely Kings finest work! would highly recommend

Grover Gardner deserves a Stand-ing ovation

In the last four years I have read the majority of Stephen King's work (I think I have four/five left to read) and The Stand is my number one book.

I have read through it four times, and each time I enjoy it as much as the last. The story is amazing and after four read throughs the sad parts still get me, the happy parts still get me, the scary parts still get me and the funny parts still get me.

Having this on audiobook has been an absolute treat, being able to hear my favourite story read to me for 6-10 hours a day while I work? That's the dream! The performance by Grove Gardner is stellar, from the minute he started to the moment he ended it was like I was reading the story for the first time again, it took The Stand to a complete new level.

I bought this for £2.99 on sale, but even if it wasn't on sale, if I was you, I would ring up Amazon and tell them, in the famous words of Philip J. Fry "shut up and take my money!"

Classic.

Possibly Stephen King’s best work, cant recommend enough, the narration is fine and lends itself well to a slightly higher playback speed, x1.50 Worked great for me.

Far too long

Could have been much shorter and therefore better. I did like the story and the narrator was brilliant. I just felt a lot was padding and served no useful purpose, but for that it would have had full stars.
