Summary

The multiverse business is booming, but there's just one catch: no one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive.

Enter Cara. Of the 382 realities that have been unlocked, Cara is dead in all but eight.

On this earth, however, she survived. Identified as an outlier and a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the wastelands and given a job and a comfortable apartment in the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. Cara knows what it's like to feel hungry and scared, so she's more than happy to reap the benefits of her new position. As long as she keeps her head down, she's on a sure path to citizenship and security for life.

But when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, Cara is plunged into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and future in ways she never could have imagined - and reveal her own role in a plot that endangers not just her world, but the entire multiverse.

Brilliant, original and beautifully read

An engaging story from start to finish. A complex yet sympathetic main character. A plot that takes you places that you don’t expect to go and it’s brilliant. I loved the narration it felt perfect for the voice of the character and the wider story.
Would recommend to anyone who will listen to me!

Cleverly constructed. Stick with it.

At first I wasn’t sure about this book but you need to stick with it as the plot is gradually revealed the more you read and it concludes well. The Earths in the multiverse were dark, gloomy and violent and, for me, had no redeeming features. The characters were equally unloveable and I found it hard to care what happened to any of them, although this changed a little towards the end. The whole story was imbued with an air of malevolence and depression which I found draining. I was torn between being fascinated by the story and wanting to read something different. Then I came to accept that you don’t have to like the world or any of the characters for it to be a unique and cleverly constructed book that pulls you in. I was glad when I got to the end but it’s a book I will keep thinking about. The narration was well done.

Richly rewarding and intelligently written

Thank you, audible reviewers, for influencing me first to get this and then to keep going after what felt to me like a lacklustre start. Having persisted beyond the first couple of chapters, I loved it. The author writes with originality and intelligence that is a delight to listen to. Unlike an awful lot of exuberantly conceived science fiction, the events follow logically from the premise and i never found myself groaning over inconsistencies and absurdities.

The reader does a first rate job both of the dialogue and the narration. Unfortunately I found her voice abrasive and difficult to listen to. This isn't a comment on the way she voiced the main character, nor of her accent (I love the accent) but I just found her sound very harsh.

Parallel worlds done right

This is a great story of world hopping that shed light on our own problems with society, power, class, ecology and capitalism. Strong, emotional, deeply sad but also sweet and tender and full of yearning.

beautifully written sci-fi for heart & mind

Thank you to the author for re-invigorating this genre. An awesome story, beautifully well told. Sci-fi with depth of character (humans you actually care about and can actually connect to); a story with lightness; heft, and subtlety; serious personal and political action without guns! I felt the magic of the best of the best in this genre.

Slow, but in a good way

I very nearly gave up on this book after jumping straight into it after a faster paced book but I’m glad I stuck with it. The story just flows like a gentle stream slowly making its way to its destination. The characters are wholesome and relatable, often making me wonder how I would act in their situation.

The way the book is written makes the words flow like honey, I can’t quite describe it but I’m sure the voice of the narrator helps to make them even more buttery.

I wasn’t sure I’d make it to the end by my goodness I’m glad I did.
