About this listen
The Devil arrives in fin de siècle London.
The setting is London, 1895, and the Devil is on the loose, in the guise of the handsome and charming Prince Lucio Rimânez. He is searching for someone morally strong enough to resist temptation, but there seems little chance he will succeed. Britain is all but totally corrupt. The aristocracy is financially and spiritually bankrupt, church leaders no longer believe in God, Victorian idealism has been banished from literature and life, and sexual morality is being undermined by the pernicious doctrines of the “New Woman”.
Lucio sets his sights on Geoffrey Tempest, a starving novelist who has just inherited a fortune, and promises to show Geoffrey how best to invest his newfound wealth. As the tragic story of Geoffrey’s meteoric rise and fall unfolds, Marie Corelli exposes the hypocrisy and immorality of modern life in this Faustian novel and best seller of its time.
Note: This title was originally published in 1895.

One of my most Favourite Women’s Author; Marie Corelli
Marie Corelli was an absolute genius of her time. This novel is 128 years old and I was transfixed in its tale. A superb story of 1895 a triumph for women authors. Since publishing The Sorrows of Satan, 33 years later women could Vote in 1928. I feel Marie Corelli had ‘Blazed a Trail’ other women could follow. Women were making massive contributions to society and this book is proof of that. Stefan Rudnicki was the perfect choice for narrator and I loved all the characters. Every time I finish a great book I feel a sense of melancholy. I will definitely read/listen to more of Maria Corelli books. If it wasn’t for Audible I don’t think l would have had the chance to browse these choices. So thank you for having such a great range.

Truly excellent!
The plot, characters, narration & cadence are all superb in this audio book. I thoroughly enjoyed it & found myself deeply immersed into this tale of Faith, and spiritual Good v Evil. It very entertainingly takes one on the perilous journey of temptation, the lure of fame, fortune & status (and the very frightening & painful repercussions of chasing them).
It's all cleverly told against the backdrop of a transitory era in the history of England where women are on the cusp of enlightenment, the country is welcoming the advancement of industry & society is somewhat divided as it tries to define morality in this newly awakened age.
I'm sure I'm not capturing all the intentions of the author & plot but it's thoroughly engaging as the storyteller expertly navigates accents, character voices, pacing, & mood .
I'm delighted this showed up in the Audible 'plus catalogue' (let's call it the APC), which I check everytime I finish a book (about every 2-3 days depending on length of book!). The APC is a brilliant component of the Audible app, providing hundreds of books & podcasts to suit all it's members. If you haven't yet discovered the APC, you've got a wonderful resource containing many gems (but certainly a number of books I can't fathom listening to!) all free to members... particularity fab if you're out of credits! oh, & the APC is organised by genre, curates a group of listens (books, podcasts, etc) it believes you'll enjoy based on your listening patterns, library & wishlists.
But back to The Sorrows of Satan, it's the first book I've listened to by author Marie Corelli & I think she's done a fantastic job with this book & I intend to look for more books by her as well as books narrated by an excellent reader, Stefan Rudnicki.

Fantastically Written
Phenomenally captivating book that ignites intrigue, curiosity & imagination. Captures the folly of wealth, earned through unsavoury measures. Inspires hard work and encourages the practice and utilisation of genius. Reminds us to be contented, hard working, and thoughtful of our brothers and sisters in this world. This and more is portrayed in this wonderful and engaging story. Superb.
