About this listen

"I did something terrible, Grace. I hope you can forgive me."

Grace hasn't been the same since the death of her best friend, Charlie. She is haunted by Charlie's words the last time she saw her and, in a bid for answers, opens an old memory box of Charlie's. It soon becomes clear there was a lot she didn't know about her best friend.

When Grace starts a campaign to find Charlie's father, Anna, a girl claiming to be Charlie's sister, steps forward. For Grace, finding Anna is like finding a new family, and soon Anna has made herself very comfortable in Grace and her boyfriend Dan's home.

But something isn't right. Things disappear, Dan's acting strangely, and Grace is sure that someone is following her. Is it all in Grace's mind? Or as she gets closer to discovering the truth about both Charlie and Anna, is Grace in terrible danger?

There was nothing she could have done to save Charlie. Or was there?

hard to get past the irritating narration

initially good story line but ultimately really weak strings pulling it all together. the narration really did not help

intriguing novella

a psychological thriller with a twisted surreal twist. gripping but not such a great climax. descriptions left sparse in places and some parts not entirely realistic.

Super debut, just the right amount of tension.

What did you like most about The Sister?

I was hooked from the beginning of this story, all the way through I wanted the answer to the question posed on the cover "I did something terrible Grace" there were several avenues we were taken down where I was convinced all would be revealed but no, the tension remained. Lot's of twists and turns. Some 'time slip' books can be awkward to follow but I particularly found the 'then' and 'now' prompts helpful and it allowed the story to flow smoothly.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I think Grace had to be my favourite character due to the amount of emotional turmoil she endured. Losing her best friend Charlie was bad enough but when a string of events begin to haunt her she really has to dig deep to overcome a breakdown and survive. At times I thought she was being a bit wishy washy but then she would bounce back. Her relationship with Dan was a good example. She displayed her strengths near the end of the book but I won't give spoilers.

Which character – as performed by Natalie Blass – was your favourite?

It's difficult to say because I thought Natalie did a brilliant job of narration. It was so easy to listen to and become totally absorbed I could visualise the whole scene. Two characters come to mind, Anna and Lexie .. both very intense people who really made an impact, especially during moments with Grace.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I always get upset when any animal is involved so that goes without saying. But the overwhelming grief and loss that envelopes Grace when Charlie dies and the way she has to deal with everyone else. The fact she was determined to track down Charlie's father was sweet.

Any additional comments?

So all in all this is an entertaining book, your emotions will leap from one level to another. It kept me hooked throughout and I was satisfied with the ending. I will look forward to more work from Louise. In audio form it was a pleasure to listen to and I found it easy to follow, sometimes it's more difficult than 'reading' a physical copy. Many thanks go to Bookouture for the opportunity to give my honest opinion. I happily give it 5*.

Intruiging

Any additional comments?

The story is a bit far fetched. Anna was horrible and in reality, anyone would've thrown her out of their house after a day! Grace was too gullible. I persevered with the book as the story line was intriguing even though it was a bit unbelievable. It's got a lot of good reviews so I wouldn't put anyone off reading it. I only finished reading it a few days ago and have already forgotten what it was about really. Maybe it's just me!

Slow start.....but keep with it

Would you consider the audio edition of The Sister to be better than the print version?

they are probablyof equal footing, i have not read the print version, i prefer to have someone read to me! it helps me to emerse myself in to the story more.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I rather enjoyed Lexi's character because she of her complex past and her crazy ways.

Which character – as performed by Natalie Blass – was your favourite?

Lexi

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved the scenes with Grace and her Grandparents, especially her grandfather the obvious love that they shared stood out

Any additional comments?

I was excited about reading this book....i found it a little slow to start with, and was not sure whether to carry on listening to it, but i stuck with it and am so glad i did it soon picked up and the twists and turns kept me listening for hours...however i did predict what was going on..... definitely worth a read

Enjoyable, with pacing slightly off and mixed quality narration

I enjoyed this book fairly well, but although the twists and turns were good, I felt they came a little too close together near the end, so I ran out of time to enjoy the different possibilities. Might just be me?

At first I didn't like the narration as the narrator seems to stress the wrong words in a sentence ever so slightly - as if she's "sight reading" (i.e. hasn't practised the piece) and isn't sure what that grammatical structure of the sentence is when she starts reading aloud. But to give her her due, she does the voices and emotions in them very well, so although I found the narration a little strange, I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected I would and thus have given 4 stars for the performance.

interesting story..

it was a slow starter. I noticed quite a lot of unnecessary adjectives at the beginning. as if it had been edited and added afterwards. However once I got in to it I couldn't put it down and had to do a mammoth listening session to finish it. I thought the writing improved and the twists and turns were enjoyable.
