Summary

Winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction Discoveries Award 2023

An intensely gripping modern myth about family, secrets, belonging, identity and the power of finding your voice.

Emily has spent her life running away. She never speaks about what happened between her and her mother at her family home when she was a child. All anyone knows is that same night her father packed up the car and drove Emily away. For her safety, he said. She hasn’t been home since.

When her mother dies on her 28th birthday, everything changes. She sees her mother everywhere. She catches glimpses at the corner of her eye. She haunts her dreams.

And as the line between dreaming and waking begins to blur, her husband Matt convinces her that the only way she can make peace with her past is to make one final visit to the house she grew up in. With Matt and her friends by her side, she feels ready to take the leap.

Opening this Pandora's box will change Emily’s life forever. Is she ready to face the truth?

Great storytelling

A really subtle and unusual blend of elements, brilliantly written and well performed. Highly recommended.

A must listen!

Caught my attention from the start! I don’t know what to expect. Didn’t guess the ending. Had lots of levels to the plot

It was ok but not brilliant. Had to speed up my listening time to finish it.

Just ok.
Not brilliant but it was a freebie from the plus catalogue so I didn’t waste a credit. Can only award 3 stars overall. Bit bored in places but then other parts were better. Listened in one sitting but wouldn’t listen again.

The Narrator

Too flamboyant in the use of adjectives especially towards the end, when the whole plot seemed confused. I felt as though there was a choice between 2 or 3 possibilities for the ending. Perhaps for me the author chose the wrong one!🤔

Phenomenally eerie and empowering

An eerie but ultimately empowering horror handled with real skill by both writer and narrator. I can't wait for Cowan-Hall's full length novel to hit the shelves.

Slow burner

Was unsure about story at the beginning but glad I persisted with listening to it. Recommended story, good twist, keeps you guessing at what is really happening.

Excellent narration.

Excellent narration. The story keeps the attention and is good if a bit thin and predictable in places.

Horror? Spiritual?

Wavered in parts but enjoyed sticking it through to the end, some resonance as it tied together. At times seemingly schizophrenic but then more like ayahuasca-type dreaming woven through to make sense at the end.

Twists

I loved the way the story builds the characters, the twists are fantastic with an excellent ending. I hope the author writes more like this.

Beautifully told, creepy and satisfying tale of female rage

I loved this!

Beautifully narrated, it held my attention from the intriguing opening paragraphs, all the way to the intensely satisfying and emotive ending. I loved being privy to our protagonist’s thoughts as she constantly tries to control how she comes across and essentially silences herself - and found her journey to finding her voice moving and powerful. Uncanny and tense, with elements of body horror and mystery - it is so well-wrought and it all comes together in an incredible climactic ending. The writing itself is also wonderful - Paige Cowan-Hall conjures powerful images with a few deft words, and manages to increase and deplete tension with great skill.

I heartily recommend!
