Summary

Agatha Christie’s classic novel featuring Superintendent Battle and ‘Bundle’ Brent.

Gerry Wade had proved himself to be a champion sleeper; so the other house guests decided to play a practical joke on him. Eight alarm clocks were set to go off, one after the other, starting at 6.30 a.m. But when morning arrived, one clock was missing and the prank had backfired with tragic consequences.

For Jimmy Thesiger in particular, the words ‘Seven Dials’ were to take on a new and chilling significance…

Critic reviews

"Her gift is pure genius." (Observer)

"An amusing, exciting, well-written story." (Outlook)

"All signs indicate that Mrs Christie has been reading P.G. Wodehouse, and she does it very well in spots. This is her gayest thriller and mustn't be missed." (Books)

loved it, a different Christie, focusing on the young and fresh-faced youth involved in a deadly secret society with humour romance and murder thrown in!

Great story

As always Agatha Christie is a master storyteller but Amelia fox’s narration was listenable but not fantastic.

Brilliant

Agatha Christie used different sleuths in this book and it made a pleasant change from Poirot and Marple. A good storyline, lots of red herrings and twists. Narrator was ok too.

Another car journey made interesting

I really enjoyed listening to this as I drove to and from my brother's house. It's a light hearted Agatha Christie with a strong female lead. I thought I knew who had done it, changed my mind, and then found out I was right all along. The very end was a bit of a surprise, though. It is read clearly and with expression

Audio perfection

An absolutely excellent reading of an Agatha Christie mystery. Emilia Fox is superb at clear characterisation and the pace is spot on. The audio quality was consistent and clear throughout, with no noticible changes of pace or style.

I had not read this book before so the audio version was a delight, with Christie providing a 'subtle'plot. :-> Plenty of characters, some intersting locations and more red herrings than a Finish dinner party. Audio perfection!

Enid Blyton for Adults!

Be ware this is one of Christie's early work and very unlike her more mature offerings.
Very 'boys' own' and Woosteresque with a bit of jolly hockey sticks thrown in.
I was going to give it two stars but the fantastic ending brought it up to three.
I won't be listening to Emelia Fox again, she just played up comedy aspects and it was irritating.

Emilia Fox was excellent!

I had my doubts as to how well Emilia Fox would read this. But she was excellent.

The story was gripping and fun. She really made the characters come to life and added humour to those characters.

Very good.
