Summary

A smart and gripping tale of conspiracy, murder and espionage in Elizabethan London. Treason sleeps for no man....

London, 1591. Nicholas Shelby, physician and reluctant spy, returns to his old haunts on London's lawless Bankside. But when the queen's spymaster Robert Cecil asks him to investigate the dubious practices of a mysterious doctor from Switzerland, Nicholas is soon embroiled in a conspiracy that threatens not just the life of an innocent young patient but the overthrow of Queen Elizabeth herself.

With fellow healer and mistress of the Jackdaw tavern Bianca Merton again at his side, Nicholas is drawn into a dangerous world of zealots, charlatans and fanatics. As their own lives become increasingly at risk, they find themselves confronting the greatest treason of all: the spectre of a bloody war between the faiths....

Great Series

I really love the main characters and the historical content in this series.
Kris Dyer is a 'new-to-me' narrator and the characters are very distinctive from his accent and tone..., so please dont ruin book 4 with a different narrator.

Another superb reading

Kris Dyer is one of the best narrators of Audio books. His ability to recall the voice of each character as the story proceeds is nothing short of amazing. There is nothing off-putting in his performance and he paces it beautifully.

The book itself was another wonderful piece of fiction with the added benefit of historical references that allow the reader (or listener) to imagine the era in which the story is set in such a descriptive way that one could almost be there.

I have loved both of The Jackdaw Mysteries books and very much look forward to more adventures. If you like Historical mysteries and fiction, I heartily recommend this and ‘The Angel’s Mark’.

Another gripping installment

I enjoyed this second installment of the exploits of doctor Shelby as he gets embroiled in conspiracies aided by the indomitable friend Bianca. It's fast-paced and exciting listen. I've already downloaded book 3.
The narrator is excellent able to give the characters different voices.

Second in the series - couldn't resist it!

Really enjoyed this book. Couldn't wait to listen after the first one & not at all disappointed. I hadn't liked the narrator at first but I'm so pleased he has done all three books. He does a very good job. These are long books and well worth purchasing but I would strongly recommend reading them in order. Off to start no three

Overall, entertaining

The second book in this series has a decent enough plot but the writer's relentless use of simile becomes wearisome and there is far too much of hair being tossed back . A good editor should rein these stylistic weaknesses in.

What a class read , brilliant.

loved this book, great writing (narrative). Riveting story, interesting and grounded characters, a twisting journey which I couldn't stop listening to. The way the locations, especially London, were brought to life is brilliant and quality writing.
