About this listen

The Serpent of Division features murder and mystery, a charming pirate, Oxford colleges and libraries, a buxom bookseller reminiscent of the Wife of Bath and a Persian physician with a fondness for Rumi. All have a part to play, as the granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer fights for survival against her ruthless neighbour Sir Robert Harcourt and the machinations of Elizabeth Wydeville, descendant of the serpent fairy Melusine and queen of Edward IV. It is set during the politically rocky final years of the Wars of the Roses.

Betrayal, treason and murder

Set at the end of the Wars of the Roses, with the Yorkist Edward IV on the throne and the defeated Henry VI in the Tower, this is a thrilling tale of betrayal, treason and murder. Alyce, widow of the Duke of Suffolk, had hoped to live quietly at Ewelme but some of her neighbours, their eyes on her rich estates and possessions, have other ideas. Christina Hardyment takes time to build her story but with well-defined and engaging characters, an acute sense of the period and a tight plot, the result is thoroughly enjoyable. Clare Wille's excellent narration makes this a recommended listen for anyone who loves historical fiction.
