Summary

Good Morning America’s “27 Books for June"

PopSugar’s Best Summer Reads of 2021

A new novel by the author of The Henna Artist, a Reese's Book Club Pick

In New York Times best-selling author Alka Joshi’s intriguing new novel, henna artist Lakshmi arranges for her protégé, Malik, to intern at the Jaipur Palace in this tale rich in character, atmosphere, and lavish storytelling.

It’s the spring of 1969, and Lakshmi, now married to Dr. Jay Kumar, directs the Healing Garden in Shimla. Malik has finished his private school education. At 20, he has just met a young woman named Nimmi when he leaves to apprentice at the Facilities Office of the Jaipur Royal Palace. Their latest project: a state-of-the-art cinema.

Malik soon finds that not much has changed as he navigates the Pink City of his childhood. Power and money still move seamlessly among the wealthy class, and favors flow from Jaipur’s Royal Palace, but only if certain secrets remain buried. When the cinema’s balcony tragically collapses on opening night, blame is placed where it is convenient. But Malik suspects something far darker and sets out to uncover the truth. As a former street child, he always knew to keep his own counsel; it’s a lesson that will serve him as he untangles a web of lies.

Transporting! As good as the 1st I eagerly wai 3rd

The story is mesmerising and well built and connected from the Henna Artist. I am really looking forward to Radhas story in part 3.

However the narrators Deepa and Ariyan need to be changed. For an india based novel, the accent and pronounciations are wrong and move the listener away from enjoyment.

Enjoyed this but a fair amount of repetition from book One

This is a good continuation from the first book and could be read stand alone. There’s a lot of repetition from Book One though it’s a completely different story.

Disappointing second in series

Not a bad story, just not the amazing read that was The Henna Artist. Having said that, i will push on to book three, if only to see how Ratha’s character shapes up in adulthood. There were some wonderful moments in this, for example the elderly dowager maharani is the same sparkling gem she was in book one. I found Nimmi annoying in many respects, though the reader did her credit with narration. Like Ratha in book one, i found her less than likeable, and at times immature and selfish in the extreme. (Whatever did Malik see? Lol! Give me Shiela any day…) A diverting read but it takes patience at times.

beautiful 2nd book

This is a beautiful book which continues the life of Lakshmi, Malik and Radha.

The story is told from different view points of Lakshmi, Malik and Nimmi.

The story is full of emotions and events of each member of this story.

Lakshmi is married to Jay Kumar, the doctor of the community centre of Shimla.

Malik moved with Lakshmi and Radha to Shimla.

Radha later marries and moves to France. In this book she is not part.

Malik is in love with Nimmi.
Nimmi lost her husband and has 2 little children.

Lakshmi sent Malik back home to stay out of trouble in Shimla.
He is still young and Lakshmi brought him back to Shimla once he understood enough of life.

While he was back home he was learning a lot about construction.

A cinema was build and something terrible happened.

Lakshmi helped Malik to clear Mano's name.

I heartily recommend this read, many surprises and a lovely book to listen.

Next book will be the 3rd book which will be about Radha's life in France.
That is why she was purposely left out of this book as much as possible.❤

Disappointed

I really loved the first book of the series and was excited when I realised there was another. Unfortunately I was disappointed. This book has a good storyline although it's slow but it felt like a completely different style of writing. It just be difficult to get the balance of re-capping details from the first book for people who haven't read it for a while, but not too much for those like me who went straight from the first book to the 2nd. I found it far too repetitive. Most of the book felt like it was explaining detail from the first book. There were even explanations within 10 minutes of each other, repeating the exact same detail. This ruined it for me unfortunately. It could have been a great book. I definitely recommend the first book but not this one.
