Summary
Esta has known nothing but Eden's Isle her whole life. Raised by her grandmother, after a fire claimed her parents and scarred her face, she's instructed to piety, to deference and acquiescence by a religious society that will not suffer anything else. Cut off from the moral iniquity of the mainland, the island believes it can stay free of the Seawomen—creatures from the water that came upon land to corrupt God's creation and Man. The inhabitants fear the water and believe the only way to remain virtuous is to never enter it, and for the women to conceive within 12 months of their appointed motheryear.
If they do not conceive, they're cast back into the ocean as a sacrifice in an act called the Untethering.
Esta witnesses such an act as a child. Her childhood growing up on the island is fraught with tension as she comes to the terms with the prohibitive malaise of the culture she finds herself in. Before long, she gets a taste of freedom and the potential of the world that is much larger than Eden's Isle. But she is bound, like many women before her, when she is married off and her motheryear is finally declared. Will she conceive a child in her loveless arranged marriage, or suffer the same fate of many women before her, and be Untethered?
The Seawomen is a debut novel crackling with imagination and love. It's about the choices we make and challenging the myths and ties that bind us.

Great
Others have complained about the narrator of this story, but I felt her tone and pace matched the story well as it unfolded. I found this hard to put down and listened to the whole story in about 4 days.

Longing for the Sea
Stunning debut novel from Chloe Timms. The lure of the ocean, the power & violence of men, the fragile friendships of trapped women, the purity of first love - all written in a way that is so evocative & visceral. The audio narration is quite slow though, so I’d recommend listening at 1.2 speed to match the urgency of the narrative.

The Handmaid’s Tale with mermaids
Really beautifully written novel. If you like The Handmaid’s Tale, you’ll like this. Very atmospheric, brooding and unique take on womens’ fight against misogyny.

Mysterious, Claustrophobic and Compelling
The book begins with an untethering, a ritual performed on women who have failed to succeed in their calling to give birth. From the very beginning the sense of restriction, control and subjugation of women is evident. Their destines are dictated by men who thirst for power, the worst of these characterised in the brutal father Jessop who leads the cult that Esta, the main character, has been born and raised into. Chloe Timms very skillfully highlights how mistrust, skewed beliefs and fanaticism can ruin lives and limit opportunities. The book is wonderfully written and I was immediately hooked. Not only is the book timely, particularly in a period where women's reproductive rights are under threat but it is beautiful and atmospheric too. I thoroughly enjoyed it
