Her men and women still miscommunicate, still remain separate in different rooms, different houses, or even different worlds. With brilliant flashes of fantasy, humour, and unexpected violence, the stories reveal the complexities of human relationships and bring to life characters who touch us deeply, evoking terror and laughter, compassion and recognition – and dramatically demonstrate why Margaret Atwood is one of the most important writers in English today.

More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets.

Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

In these nine tales, Margaret Atwood ventures into the shadowland earlier explored by fabulists and concoctors of dark yarns such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Daphne du Maurier and Arthur Conan Doyle - and also by herself, in her award-winning novel Alias Grace. In Stone Mattress, Margaret Atwood is at the top of her darkly humorous and seriously playful game.

The world of this novel moves back in time as the layers are peeled away to reveal the truth about a long-ago family tragedy that impacts the characters' lives for years after. Beginning with a young college student haunted by her own choices and ending with the surprisingly serene image of an aging woman looking back on her turbulent life, the story encompasses a panorama of events set against the changing social backdrop of the middle years of the 20th century.

In each of these tales Margaret Atwood deftly illuminates the single instant that shapes a whole life: in a few brief pages we watch as characters progress from the vulnerabilities of adolescence through the passions of youth into the precarious complexities of middle age. By superimposing the past on the present, Atwood paints interior landscapes shaped by time, regret, and life's lost chances, endowing even the banal with a sense of mystery.

Story
For Naomi Ash, growing up the daughter of a clairvoyant medium exposed her to the chicanery of a business where telling people what they want to hear is the only currency. And the sleepy hamlet of Train Line, New York, nestled against a frigid lake in the westernmost fringes of the state, was founded on, built, and is still sustained by it. Now a young woman and a practicing medium herself, Naomi still lives in the place that nourished and raised her - the place where she fell in love. Love, however, can be deadly....
Summary
Margaret Atwood’s The Robber Bride is inspired by "The Robber Bridegroom", a wonderfully grisly tale from the Brothers Grimm in which an evil groom lures three maidens into his lair and devours them, one by one.
But in her version, Atwood brilliantly recasts the monster as Zenia, a villainess of demonic proportions, and sets her loose in the lives of three friends.

Meet some true evil
Story:
This really is an interesting re-imagining of a Grimm's classic. There is something very beguiling about truly evil people (that's why the most interesting character in Paradise Lost is the devil, right?) and Zenia is truly an abomination. I really liked Atwood's characterisation of three very different women; all seduced by her lies, as are their men by her charisma and sexuality. The ending wasn't strong - but that didn't really matter - the unravelling of the story is brilliant. Overall, I think this is a strong work by Atwood.
Narration:
When I first started listening it sounded a little bit like the woman at the beginning of Desperate Housewives, which really put me off. I did gradually get used to her voice, but I'm not sure she was the best for intonation and particular passages didn't get quite the right emphasis. However, this did not overly detract from the story which was excellent and overall I wouldn't allow it to put you off a listen.

I love Margaret Atwood's novels and wasn't disappointed. The plot is character driven and the characters credible and engaging. Atwood's prose is crystal clear as always. Brilliantly narrated. I rarely give 5 stars but this is exceptionally enjoyable.

Boring and uninspiring
I loved the Handmaid's Tale and was really looking forward to this book. Unfortunately, I have just decided to give up about half way through as it is terribly longwinded and nothing happens. I even googled the story line in case I was being impatient......but it doesn't get much better! Maybe it's just too high-brow for me although I love a challenging well written book.

I'm a big Margaret Attwood fan. I've read this book twice before. 1st time listening to it. I didn't like the narrator's voice at 1st but I guess it was because it wasn't the same as in my head. she really grew on me and I found it impossible not to listen as much as I could.

could not understand the story
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
this book had great ratings so I downloaded it. But I could not understand what it was about. I went through 6 chapters and finally gave up as it was boring.
What was most disappointing about Margaret Atwood’s story?
Maybe she is meant to be read. The read performance does not work for Margaret Atwood
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Could not understand the dialogue- who was saying what
If this book were a film would you go see it?
no

Outstanding
I am new to Atwood novels (only heard of her through watching the TV show - Handmaids tale).
I'm so impressed by the level of detail in her writing and how imaginative it is. I really like her writing style and had some good laughs at some parts. I would definitely read another one of her novels or listen to on audible. Had an enjoyable week, listening to this on audible.

Wonderful Book Sorry it Ended
I am new to Atwood, having only listened to the Handmaids and Testements so I was not sure what to expect. I was engaged in this book and the lives of the four women from minute one this was helped by the wonderful narration. I love Atwood's style of prose her attention to detail and ability to weave a story that is immersive. I really felt present in the story of these women and their histories and what had brought them together. Xania was a wonderful character so evil and manipulative and the impact she has on the others by mirroring them in order to bend them to her will. A few times I laughed out loud at her audacity. These were great characters with depth and purpose and how their lives unfolded around the mayhem created by Xania made for great listening. I am now going to give Atwood's other books a go.
