Summary

Jo and Ed are unlikely best friends.

He is the only son of wealthy parents. She was born on 'the wrong side of the tracks'. He loves sport, messing around with cars, and drinking. She's ambitious and hardworking. They are, in fact, a perfect team. They've stood by each other for almost 30 years. They've built a successful business together.

There's just one problem.

Jo is having an affair with Ed's wife. And now someone knows their secret.

It's Christmas Eve 2014.

And nothing is ever going to be the same again...

Another beautiful book by Jane Retzig

What does Jan Cramer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Jan Cramer compliments Jane's dialogue and story line beautifully. Its a wonderful combination.I listen to quite varied audible books and I must say Jan Cramer is exceptionally easy on the ear.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Jane has a wonderful skill of creating real characters in a rich and wonderful story line.

Any additional comments?

I would recommend this book and other work by Jane; Boundaries was also a delight to read. Jane has a talent for writing stories that keep you smiling right the way through.

An absorbing story which will keep you listening

What made the experience of listening to The Retreat the most enjoyable?

The setting and characters are so convincing that I found I cared what happened to them from very early in the story. There are many twists and turns and I was never sure what would happen next. It kept me guessing right to the end.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It has to be Jo. She is complex and 'real' and I felt I knew her. I desperately wanted her to find what she was looking for.

What about Jan Cramer’s performance did you like?

The greatest compliment I can give her is that I forgot that the story was being narrated and thought I was listening to the characters. Her voice was perfect for this book.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Can there be a happy ending?

Any additional comments?

This is Jane's best novel to date. I hope there will be many more.

Enjoyable thought-provoking romance!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely. I really enjoyed reading this novel and found it thought- provoking. I was so engrossed I didn't synch the audio all the way through initially. But it is such a cleverly constructed read and story with complex engaging characters that I found the audio a really good listen on it's own . Others may prefer to simply listen to the audio and Jan Cramer's narration works very well here. So good to have all the options and when a book is as well-written as this is, you don't just want to read or listen to it once.

Any additional comments?

Another fabulous novel from Jane Retzig! Engaging absorbing story with interesting complex characters and a cleverly woven storyline. On the surface this is a love story. It's a romance that in real life people gossip about, knowing the outcome, but not how it evolved. I love the way the author trickles into the story, the background which slowly builds and explains so much. It's a lovely story, and there will be many who can identify with some of the aspects of the complicated relationship issues, but outcomes vary. And it's also thought provoking and a flag waving to those who settle for second best, and try to convince themselves it's for the best for everyone if they deny what they really want. Loved it!
