About this listen
Penguin presents the audio edition of The Remarkable Life of the Skin by Monty Lyman, read by Matthew Spencer.
How does our diet affect our skin? What makes the skin age? And why can’t we tickle ourselves?
Perched on the exterior of our delicate and intricate bodies, the skin is our largest and fastest-growing organ. We see it, touch it and live in it every day. It's a habitat for a mesmerizingly complex world of micro-organisms, its physical functions are vital to our health and indeed our survival, and it's crucial to our sense of identity. Yet how much do we really know about it?
Through the lenses of science, sociology and history, Dr Monty Lyman leads us on a journey through the comedy, tragedy and exquisite humanity of our most underrated and overlooked organ. By delving into something that seems so familiar, he reveals how the skin is far stranger and much more complex than you've ever imagined, making it impossible ever again to take your skin for granted.

Brilliant listen! Would highly recommend
Lyman has a wonderful way with words. He smoothly transitions from anecdote to in-depth medical descriptions with ease, and demonstrates a writing style with rhythm beyond his years. A truly engrossing and informative listen. 10/10!

Fascinating
A complete examination of the skin, full of factual information presented in a fascinating way. Gave me a new found respect for this organ and made me realise how much I take it for granted. Have already made some lifestyle changes as a result! Loved it.

Fascinating journey across science and culture
This brilliantly performed book is read by a narrator who deftly moves between fact, science, story and analogy together to make the science really come alive.
Your skin will crawl at the skin safari, introducing us to the bugs and parasites that live on our skin, you’ll wonder at our wonderful ability to feel the pain and pleasure of touch, and you’ll want to care for your ageing and sun-exposed skin more than ever before. A protective layer that looks both inward and outward to keep us alive, skin tells us more about ourselves than any other organ.
Lyman travelled the globe to research this book. I highly recommend you go on the journey with him.
