About this listen

Harry Hole, drunkard, loner and brilliant detective is reassigned to surveillance after a high profile mistake. He’s bored by his new job until a report of a rare and unusual gun being fired sparks his interest because of its possible links to Neo Nazi activity. Then a former soldier is found with his throat cut. Next Harry’s former partner is murdered. Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night her head was smashed in? The investigation leads Harry to suspect that the crimes have their roots in the battlefields of Eastern Front during WWII. In a quest that takes him to South Africa and Vienna, Harry finds himself perpetually one step behind the killer. He will be both winner and loser by the novel's nail-biting conclusion.

The Redbreast. He’s your judge, jury and executioner…And he must be stopped.

Would you listen to The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 again? Why?

I would listen to this book again despite it being a thriller/detective story. The war background story was so well written that it made me a Nesbø fan.

What other book might you compare The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 to, and why?

I like Jussi Adler Olsen's Q series and I think the first of the series, Mercy, has a lot of similar things than The Redbreast although the stories are nothing alike.

Have you listened to any of Sean Barrett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've listened to a few other Jo Nesbø books read by Sean Barrett. The reading is equally good in all of them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, definitely, it is a book I would have wanted to listed to in one sitting. I didn't but I would have wanted to.

Any additional comments?

I've read/listened to the first five Harry Hole books by Jo Nesbø so far and I think it's the best of the them. The Redbreast was such a pleasure to listen to after disappointing #1 and #2 books in Harry Hole series.

I like the way that Jo Nesbo writes, though I do find his stories a trifle complex, meaning I often have to rewind a little if I am multi tasking. The characters are good and the book is well written and thought provoking.
I did find one thing a bit odd and unfinished though - cannot give too much detail as that would spoil it, but one person was shown to have criminal actions - but was not brought to book. Maybe left for another in the series?

Worth reading overall

Excellent

I was immersed into Harry's world with the narrator doing a sterling job. Excellent

I’m reading and enjoying this series in order, but found this one to be absolutely marvellous. It’s well structured, the bird motif is handled sensitively,, the characters are well developed and the reader’s emotions are treated to a roller coaster ride. The handling of the two periods of time was skilfully done, and I was never confused. The reality of the events, treated without sentiment was effective. I also learned a lot about Norway’s war and post war history. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

I first heard the narrator Sean Barrett when I bought a copy of The Second World War by Anthony Beevor. His tone, timbre, and ability to convey characters brings this book to life.

This is my first Jo Nesbo book and I'll buy another and probably more, thanks to both the author and the narrator.

What's the audio book equivalent of a page-turner?

An incredible murder mystery that will enthral and intrigue you every step of the way, with yet another fantastic narrating performance by Sean Barrett.

Gripping

First audiobook I have heard from Jo Nesbo, and it won't be my last. Persevere with the initial stories of the Eastern front, it does all come together at a thrilling end. I look forward to hearing more about Inspector Harry Hole. I enjoyed the story and the narration. Not quite a Stig Larson story, but does merit comparison.

Slow burner, but thrilling finish

This is a decent story, tightly plotted and with well drawn, now familiar characters. However, the audio book itself needs more careful editing! There are numerous re-takes (where the reader makes a mistake, pauses and re-reads the sentence correctly) which should have been edited out and have not been. This makes an irritating listen in places, where the spell is broken for the audience by yet another unedited re-take. Tut tut.

I had not read any Jo Nesbo novels previous to listening to The Redbreast, misguidedly I was put off by the author's name!. This is not the first Harry Hole novel and I probably should have started at the beginning but never the less I enjoyed the whole experience. the book is very well read by Sean Barnett with the correct Norwegian pronunciation of the names and place names so that should I read a print version of another Jo Nesbo novel I will have a better sound of the names in my head as I go.

Harry Hole is an enigmatic character and I don't know if I like him or not but he is well drawn and the listener is drawn into how he thinks and why things eventually fall into place. The reflections back to time on the Eastern Front on the German side are interesting and annoying as it is not clear who every one is but this is all part of how the book ends. Away from the main plot the many asides and sub plots lead the listener to fall into the holes left for Harry Hole and to be rescued from them by our detective and his allies. Overall a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable listen for those who like detective novels.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Redbreast: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 3 to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the book but imagine it is equally a page turner as most of Jo Nesbo's books are.
