About this listen

The Judds, formerly of London N1, but now scattered, are about to be thrown together again by the shockwaves of their eldest child Juliet's release from prison in New York State. The family is devastated by Juliet's conviction and imprisonment for an art theft, and the nature of this theft and the reasons for it plague all the protagonists.

In The Promise of Happiness, Booker-shortlisted and Whitbread Prize-winner Justin Cartwright tells the stories and secrets of the Judds, which are, as in all families, interwoven yet separate.

A joy from beginning to end. This is my book of the year with one I can see myself reading again in the future

Extremely well written

I found the book ghastly. Utterly depressing. The characters were caricatures/stereotypes. The commentary was misogynistic and racist. I found it annoying on every level.

Misogynistic, racist, stereotypes
