When his ship is torpedoed by a German U-Boat during World War I, a man is taken prisoner by the Germans. Later, he escapes from the U-Boat to the sea, where he discovers a vast body of land, previously submersed on the Pacific Ocean floor, recently ripped from it through some geological upheaval, and bearing evidence that a highly intelligent, monstrous, race shares dominion of the Earth with humanity, and for the moment exercising it's rule only on the ocean floor.

Richard Upton Pickman is a Bostonian painter, notorious for creating horrifying paintings. His ghoulish works are brilliant, but they're so graphic that his membership in the Boston Art Club is revoked and he finds himself shunned by his fellow artists. Then Pickman mysteriously disappears, and his friend finds himself on a mission of horror and evil to discover the truth.

This short story first appeared in science fiction magazine Amazing Stories and tells of a meteorite crash in rural Massachusetts...and of the horrific results. It was one of HP Lovecraft's most popular works for its combination of science fiction and horror, and it was the author's personal favorite short story.
