Summary
A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times best-selling author Heather Gudenkauf
She thought she was alone....
True-crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.
As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls - haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them.

Really good thriller
Well I enjoyed this book, it was a little hard to get into, then I was engrossed. It's easy to listen to, the plot was good. The characters were believable.

Painful from beginning to end.
Well, that's 9hrs and 29 mins I'll never get back. What a load of rubbish. I'm amazed that this was ever published. The book jumps from one era to the other without any warning. Hence you're playing catch-up for most of the tale. This book has been written with a film in mind. It would probably make a decent movie, but as for a book, it's dreadful. The narrator doesn't help, dull as dishwater. Read something else, I wish I had.

Story doesn't hang together
The idea for the plot is good, and there are some nice bits, but unfortunately it doesn't hang together well. The plot relies on characters acting in very bizarre ways. For example, Wiley tells Becky that she's locked someone who she believes to be the bad guy in the barn and names him. Becky knows that isn't the real bad guy, but for some reason doesn't say anything about it and instead sits and reminisces with Wiley until it's too late. It's difficult to get past this stuff and enjoy the story.

A bit Gruesome
This book was not really my cup of tea. Gruesome in parts with a long drawn out, unrealistic ending. I became bored with it in the end.

Not for me.
This was incredibly ridiculous the whole way through. Everything follows the standard tropes. The way she wrote the last few chapters were awful.
It was slow moving and alternating between two characters in the present and one in the past. Then she jumps on accusing someone with absolutely no evidence.
The police dialogue is laughable. Sounds like she was pulling that from bad cop shows. At least this was dirt cheap.

Unputdownable
Wylie struggles to overcome writer’s block holed up in a remote cabin hoping to finally complete her true crime story of a family massacre that occurred several decades earlier. A blizzard, a stray mute child and a psychopath weren’t part of her plans.
Heather Gudenkauf has been one of my favorite writers since she burst onto the scene with THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE. She elevates her storytelling in THE OVERNIGHT GUEST with heart-thumping, fast paced plot and compelling characters leaving me unable to put down the book.
I don’t want to give away any of the twists and turns, so don’t read too many reviews before digging into THE OVERNIGHT GUEST. Keep a light on.

Excellent
A phenomenal book…
Cleverly told with such interesting characters and dual timelines, it unfolds effortlessly and beautifully.
HG certainly knows how to tell a story, and she really amplifies her work with the little descriptive details that many writers simply leave out.
It’s a scary, gorgeously written tale.
My one and only complaint is that the main character, the female protagonist isn’t like able at all, she is selfish, horrible to this shocked, mute child and then the way she treats the dog just annoyed me. Also she never gave the poor pup the credit he deserved for discovering the little boy in the first place.
I can’t give anymore away but it’s a fantastic read, I just wish Wylie had been more relatable and not quite so selfish.
Regardless, very entertaining and very well written.
I highly recommend this one.

UNBELIEVEABLE
Starts off slow and stays there. There are 3 stories in one. Moves very slow. It’s one of those stories that switches from the present day to the past. I didn’t like it. Not very believable.
RECOMMENDATION: SKIP IT

Terrible story line and narration
Could not understand stellar reviews on this. Storyline predictable. Narration not suited at all for this book. Narrator tone often flippant and in serious situations. Do yourself a favor and fast forward a lot. You won’t miss much.

Great story and narration.
A bit confusing at the beginning due to multiple stories being told. Aside from that, great story with some twists and good narration.

Good mystery drama
Good story with some unpredictable twist. Keeps you on edge right up to the end. Some unsettling domestic violence and abuse but a good storyline and good a ending! It was worth the listen.

Terrible plot and narration
I struggled to finish this story. In essence, it was choppy and the chapters not at all connected with multiple plots occurring in the past and present. I still don’t get the motive. Supposedly, the author tries to tie things together in the end, but it makes no sense whatsoever. Life is way too short to read lousy books and this was definitely poor writing and awful narration.
