About this listen

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a radio show which aired in the USA from 1939-1950, most famously starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Episodes from 1939 through 1943 were written or adapted by Edith Meiser from the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. From 1943 onward, most shows were written or adapted by the team of Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher or Green and Leslie Charteris who replaced Meiser who left the show over her disagreements with a sponsor over the amount of violence in the program. classic drama

some good stories here, I liked the way they wer linked in some way to an original Sherlock Holmes story. Yes it is a bit dated but that's part of the charm. people mention the adverts but it is just the start and end of each episode, as you would get in commercial TV or radio

Great old time radio

loved it. Liked the way the chapters were broken up so I can still skip between episodes. Wish the titles were put on the chapter headings though.

Over 12 hours of the best Holmes and Watson EVER!

I have listened to other broadcasts with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce but they are full of ads. The ads were in the original broadcasts but this book has removed them apart from the ads that are necessary due to being in the introduction and finish plus being narrated by Tom Conway. There are other ads prior to the book, before the break, after the break and then at the finish of the book but these have been removed which is amazing. if you listen to other broadcasted books there are around 4 more ads per story which is a LOT considering that there are 30 episodes/ stories in this book.

If your wondering, Basil and Nigel's performances can't be beaten as Holmes and Watson as always.

This is a must listen for any Sherlock fans.

The first and the best

Loved this collection Holmes and Watson played to perfection.
Rathbone is the best ever Holmes.
Stories maybe a bit better but they are of a time
Reminds you of Saturday mornings watching BBC two and black and white films
You feel the chemistry between the two actors friends both in portrayal and in real life.
Also have the discs with the adverts for Petri wine and war bonds.
These are also worth listening to for there nostalgia.
If you enjoy these you can a!so get the collection of films on Amazon(which I did and loved but that's a different review).

Publisher tells lies - These are NOT advert free

I do hate being taken for a ride by anyone - and for the publisher to declare these stories are free of commercials is an absolute lie. They have some of the verbiage removed, but they are a direct advert for a US wine company and if so sponsored, it is verging on totally crooked, to charge for this audiobook.
The sound quality of the recordings is variable. The actual individual story lengths are short and constantly interrupted by Dr Watson - theoretically talking to the sponsor - from where the longer wine adverts were removed. Very ‘bitty’ to follow.
As for the stories themselves - the content and composition would have had Arthur Conan Doyle committing a mischief to the awful writers - who were certainly neither well read in English literature, English grammar or British habits and geography.
There are many great follow on stories to Doyle’s originals. Sadly, these are not among them.
The only positive comment I can make, is that it’s nice to wallow in the nostalgia of hearing the voices of Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone. At least their film appearances as Holmes and Watson were entertaining. The radio versions are just not very good.
