Summary

England, 1799: A traumatized soldier returning to a derelict inheritance. A widow with a small son and a manipulative father.

Major Matthew Southam returns from India, hoping to put the trauma of war behind him and forget his past. Instead, he finds a derelict estate and a family who wish he'd died abroad.

Charlotte MacKinnon married without love to avoid her father's unpleasant choice of husband. Now a widow with a young son, she lives in a small Cotswold village with only the money she earns by her writing.

Matthew is haunted by his past, and Charlotte is fearful of her father's renewed meddling in her future. After a disastrous first meeting, can they help each other find happiness?

lovely story but narrator lost it a star

Beautiful story of life after trauma and bullying relatives.
just loved how the characters stories were all intertwined. Gently paced and demure - loved the Davey character.

Satisfying unusual historical novel

Witty, engaging historical with well a rounded cast of characters. There is satisfying character and story development, a great tangle of community, relationships, intrigue and gentle humour with a twist. A great read and audio performance.

A somewhat more unusual story line - lots of twists and turns

Really enjoyed this. Nice long story that kept me easily entertained and caught my attention. I would be happy to listen to this again.

The Blurb is Very Deceptive…

This is a lovely, easy going yet not rushed tale of life in a small, out of the way village on the outskirts of Bath and the two widows (of the title) who are carving out a living and maintaining their hard one independence. “Mrs Captain” and “Mrs Sargent”. Both completely different to each other and perfectly suited to running and maintaining a household with each other and Mrs Captain’s son.

They’re making a living and just about getting by, helping their community and being seen as approachable Ladies. It all changes when a beyond “shell shocked” army Major and his recently acquired Sargeant batman arrive to inspect the Major’s recently inherited property.

This is a story about how these two households interact with and subsequently support each other. We watch them teach, bond, grow, change and help each other and their community and in the process find true love.

It’s not a “boy meets girl, fall in love and live happily ever after” 20 chapters story. It is an engaging, enjoyable, unhurried journey and at the end of the trauma, learning curve and laughter, you forget that they’re just characters - they become family.

An added bonus is that this is an Audible Plus title. What a pure pleasure! Great story and great narration.

A very gentle story.

This story is about people, how life has changed them as they grew up. There is really no one important character, everyone has a part in the story.
The story starts slowly and gently flows along, taking you along the dips and highs.

Marvellous story

I read this book on Kindle Unlimited years ago and loved it then. The audiobook just as lovely with an excellent narrator. I got more out of it this time as I rather rushed through it when reading rather than listening. It is one of the very best historical romances I have read - and I have read A LOT! The slow development of character and plot, the whole cast of characters; Matthew is everyone’s hero (well, mine definitely) and Charlotte was a sensible grown up woman. So good. Highly recommend this book. It is one I will listen to again and again.

I loved it

The hero is a decent, principled man damaged by war who blunts his guilt with alcohol. The heroine is a managing, independent widow with a young son and an ambitious father. Their love story is restrained but beautiful.
