Summary
Lifelong friends, now in their sixties, James, a teacher, and Hugh, a TV personality, both live with attractive women 25 years their junior. But the age difference is a time bomb, ticking away at the heart of both relationships.
Kate's hunger for a life more in keeping with her own age threatens to bring her eight years with James to an end. And how is Julia to cope when her own career begins to blossom while Hugh's is withering before their eyes? The arrival of Miss Beatrice Bachelor, a razor-sharp Oxford spinster, fuels the discontent in both girls.

I loved this book
A great book with beautiful narration. A lovely mix of eclectic characters and I did not want it to end.

uninteresting
Boring! Full of small details totally irrelevant to the plot. I found it difficult to continue listening to the end ,

Loved it!
The storyline held my attention throughout and I liked the variety of characters included in the book. Well read with clear speech which was important to me as can be slightly hard of hearing. Very enjoyable.

A novel of its time
Well written and excellently narrated. I enjoyed the characters and their dilemmas brought about by romantic relationships between men in their sixties and women in their thirties.
How things have moved on since the 1990s regarding gender roles. Would love to know what millennials and younger might think of this novel.

Of its time
A great listen, but very firmly set in the 1990s.
As usual, minute observation and great characterisation.

Utterly dreadful
The worse reading of a book ever. Joanna Trollope deserves better. So disappointed a waste of money..

A wonderful surprise
I have never read a Joanna Trollope book. To my shame I had an image of them which meant I didn’t think they would be for me. This was suggested to me and I loved it and of course Eleanor Bron brought it to life in a way that I don’t think any other reader could’ve done. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and would suggest that those who have never tried a Joanna Trollope book. This would be the one to start with.

Wish there had been at least one more chapter
I had listened to this title many years ago and decided to purchase it on Audible since I enjoy Trollope's cozy reads. It was as enjoyable the second go around but I forgot how abruptly it ends. I wish there had been one more chapter, a little bit more neatness of tying up loose ends, but maybe that is because I was so involved in the characters. I did think that the girlfriend made awful relationship choices and life decisions, but I like that Trollope reveals the consequences to her choices without preaching or being predictable.

Loved the ending. I was so worried it was going to be spoilt at the end that I put off listen to the last 2 minutes...

A Story of Real Lives...
This is a beautifully narrated story of lives that seem real and relatable. Eleanor Bron's narration of Joanna Trollope's book is a perfect 10.
