About this listen

Everything old is new again in love and murder.

Work together, live together, and play together is the name of the game for Royce Locke and Sawyer Key. But one of those things changes when Chief Mendoza taps Sawyer to lead the newly formed cold case unit. His first task: solve the Magnolia Murders that spanned three decades and suddenly stopped in 2000.

Chaos ensues when a fourth Magnolia Queen contender is murdered during a preliminary round. With the pageant's one hundredth anniversary looming, the pressure is on to produce results. Royce and Sawyer, along with their new partners, have to team up to solve the Magnolia Murders—old and new.

As the investigation continues, a surprise visitor and an unexpected phone call force the men to face painful things from their pasts. The future Royce and Sawyer dream of is within their grasp, but first, they'll need to uproot the seeds of discontent they've buried deep.

Contains mature themes.

Messy plotting, unsatisfying writing

I've read the other books featuring these characters so I was looking forward to their next chapter. Sadly, I was disappointed. The issue with this book is that the author pointlessly split the mc's upat the start, put one working on 'the Explorer program' and the other heading a new cold case team. The 'Explorer program' angle was ignored. The cold case re- investigation is a mess, no linear narrative of proper investigation. The break in the case was so ridiculous that for the ex investigating officer to have missed it was tantamount to reckless deriliction of duty. Then comes a very handy new copycat murder. The author just throws in a scene or two of investigation between sex and family dramaz. I was bored off my t*** but Tristan James is so soothing, so I finished this unsatisfying book.

Disappointing

Personally I was disappointed with the storyline. It seemed to me that Sawyer got a promotion, while poor Royce got sidelined into a nothing job. Shame cos I really liked these characters but now theyre not going to work together its not as exciting. Good job the series is finishing.
