It was ok

The reference to the changes, food and culture in Trinidad in the 1940s was interesting. The actors captured the local accents very well. The main character Boyce was a truly awful character with no redeeming qualities. The references to post colonial colourism and class structure was subtly weaved into the story. Because Boyce was so insufferable I found it difficult to connect to the characters. Although it was obviously all women linked to him had vulnerabilities and suffered abuse at his hands. It was still difficult to see his appeal to the women in his life. The blurb described him as charismatic. I beg to differ. There was nothing charismatic or redeeming about him. I wanted to give up reading half way through but stuck it out because I absolutely loved the author’s previous work. I did not enjoy this one as much.
