Первый биографический очерк о Майн Риде появился в английском справочнике "Men of the Time" ("Люди нашего времени") за 1837 год. Сведения о себе, согласно традиции, предоставил сам Майн Рид. Обладая буйной фантазией, он исказил некоторые факты своей биографии, местами кое-что приукрасив. Ввиду отсутствия иных сведений литературоведам долгое время приходилось основываться лишь на этих данных, пока в 1890 году не вышла книга вдовы писателя, Элизабет Рид, под названием "Майн Рид: воспоминания о его жизни". В 1900 году вышло переработанное издание этой книги - "Капитан Майн Рид: его жизнь и приключения".
