Summary

A dark and brilliant new stand-alone thriller from a rising star in the crime genre.

He is her husband. She is his captive.

Her husband calls her Jane. That is not her name.

She lives in a small farm cottage, surrounded by vast, open fields. Everywhere she looks, there is space. But she is trapped. No one knows how she got to the UK: no one knows she is there. Visitors rarely come to the farm; if they do, she is never seen.

Her husband records her every movement during the day. If he doesn't like what he sees, she is punished.

For a long time, escape seemed impossible. But now, something has changed. She has a reason to live and a reason to fight.

Now, she is watching him and waiting....

Dark, disturbing, powerful and unputdownable!

OMG what a brilliant book! It may be only the middle of January but this book is definitely a contender for my favourite book of 2021! It is a book which will stay with me for a long, long time.

It is an incredibly powerful tale of human trafficking. Jane (not her real name) lives with her husband, Len (not really her husband) in a ramshackle old farmhouse on the Fens. Cameras watch her all day long. She isn't allowed to close a door, even when she goes to the toilet. If she breaks any of Len's rules she is punished.

This was not an easy listen, but it was impossible to stop listening. It is harrowing and Will Dean does not spare his readers from the horror of Jane's existence. The writing is brilliant and the tension builds up until the last 25% of the book when it just hurtles along to the conclusion. I found myself holding my breath several times. Mr Dean's vivid descriptions of the flat, desolate fenland landscape adds to the bleakness.

The narration by Sarah Lam was incredible. When she was narrating the part of Len it made my skin crawl.

This is my first book by Will Dean but I will now be listening to anything else he has ever written!

Five stars all round

I listened to this in two days. It's totally gripping. You will hold your breath in places, it's so tense. Highly recommended!

Cruel and depressing

This is a powerful novel, and maybe a story that needs to be told. However, definitely not a good listen during lockdown. It is a very harsh and affecting story, and I am sure the writer's heart is absolutely in the right place. However, not for the sensitive or faint hearted. and should come with a warning to that effect.
Yes, I had to keep reading to the end, but at moments could only bear to listen for a limited time
Some of the descriptions of violence and the consequent injuries and pain seemed sadistic - almost gratuiistically so.
Will Dean is a gifted writer, but I'm afraid I shall avoid his books in future. .

Highly recommended

I am sure this is a great novel to read, but I suspect it’s the fantastic narration from Sarah Lam that makes this incredible, tense, claustrophobic story into an excellent audiobook. I started looking at the clock, thinking of ways to move my commitments around so I could keep listening and find out what happens to the protagonist. It’s a first person narrative, that really keeps you on tenterhooks.

Jaw dropping!

This was an incredible story. My jaw hit the floor a few times. I'm at a loss for words but it was just excellent. Sarah Lam done a awesome job with the narration too. She pitched it perfectly.

OUTSTANDING

The Last Thing to Burn will stay with me for a very long time. The pace makes your heart race as you will Jane to escape her abusive husband. His controlling behaviour is captured perfectly by Will Dean and will make any previous victim shake to the core. I rarely dish out 5 stars but this book is simply outstanding. Buckle up it's an emotional roller-coaster. It's up there with Where The Crawdads Sing and American Dirt.

A story that will stay with you long after it ends

I started following Will Dean on a popular SoMe platform (mainly for the dog pics and forest photos)
So pleased this book lived up to the early reviews. I couldn’t help but fall instantly in love with Jane and was cheering her on every step of the way.
Just be warned, you’ll likely experience every conceivable emotion within these pages…and if you don’t, well you’re probably not human
