In 1970, one of Mississippi’s more colorful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college dropout, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim, until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family.
Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper. The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courthouse in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison.But in Mississippi in 1970, "life" didn’t necessarily mean "life", and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began.

Compelling as always!
Not my favourite Grisham novel, but nonetheless, a compelling read. Grisham writes fiction that feels like history.

Amazing book and great narrator
I don’t often read books but have recently started to listen to Audible books. John Grisham is a superb author and this book literally sucks you into the story from the start. Michael Beck reads with great style and emotion. The combination of Grisham’s descriptive writing and Beck’s narration is really first class. Brilliant!

The long way home
Brilliantly told , captivating story. The storyteller manages to portray the long list of participants superbly differentiating between each, a tall order in such a long tail. I loved it. I am so glad I still have more of these Clanton books to read.

Beautiful
Wonderful story, beautifully set in a part of the world Grisham clearly not only knows intimately, but also obviously loves. The story is more about the beautiful friendship that grows between the two main characters and is wonderfully narrated. The ending is made the more emotionally engaging due to the brilliantly emotive narration and it makes you feel like you're a part of the story. It's Grisham as you know him but I wonder how much would be lost without such fabulous narration. It really makes the book for me. Can't wait to move onto Sycamore Row!

As always with John Grisham - a good read. Not quite among the best - confused by the title: was Miss Cally actually the last jurer?

Very enjoyable
Grisham does either write superb stories that really draw one in, or stories that are totally boring. Thankfully this was one of the former sort.
I really enjoyed the story, it also helps to like the characters, which I did. This was an interesting tale that showed the intolerance towards Black people at the time when segregation was being overturned, albeit with plenty of animosity, but there was so much more to it than that. An interesting story of a young man making something of himself when he takes over the small town newspaper, and the friendship that he forged with a lovely Black lady. This has left me thinking long after I have finished the book.
I was taken in by the twist at the end.

Never fails
It’s been a while since I read or listened to a John Grisham book but I instantly remembered just how compelling and captivating his writing is. The narration is perfect, the issues of racial integration in the South are dealt with sensitively and with insight. Loved this book

well read as usual by Michael beck.
the ending was a little cheesy and quick. but a good book overall . enjoyed it.
