Summary

Hard-core military science fiction at its very best, John Scalzi's The Last Colony is the third in The Old Man's War series.

They must save themselves – or die trying.

John Perry was living peacefully on one of humanity's colonies – until he and his wife were offered an opportunity these ex-supersoldiers couldn't resist. To come out of retirement and lead a new frontier world.

However, once on the planet, they discover they've been betrayed. For this colony is a pawn in an interstellar game of war and diplomacy. Humanity's Colonial Union has pitched itself against a new, seemingly unstoppable alien alliance, dedicated to ending all human colonization.

As this contest rages above, Perry struggles to keep his terrified colonists alive on the surface below – despite dangerous interstellar politics, violence and treachery. And the planet has yet to reveal its own fatal secrets.

A fantastic follow up

I loved Old Man's War, but I didn't feel Ghost Brigades hit the same high notes. I enjoy it, but I felt it was a slightly inferior effort. I do however, love The Last Colony. Worth a listen!

A tad disappointing

//not as thrilling as old mans war, storyline good, perhaps it was. the person who voiced the story not putting passion into it.

Good story but even better world expansion

Political intrigue, interesting characters, surprising battles, this book has exactly what you want.
Even though the premise of the story seems to point to a boring story, especially after the previous books, the twists of the story deliver a surprisingly captivating story.

Treads water a little

This is a good continuation of the series but it felt a little pedestrian. Neither plot or characters really break a sweat. That said, if you enjoyed the preceding books you'll probably enjoy this one too.

Lightweight

I listened to this on headphones as I pottered around the house, fussed in the shed, and went for short walks. The storyline was undemanding and not especially imaginative. Had hoped for more after the first two instalments. Fekt like this was targeted at a YA audience. Won't be continuing with this series.

Brilliant all round.

Great story, gripping from start to finish. Engaging characters presented so well that I feel I've met them, but I expect that from Scalzi. My first book read by Dufris, but it won't be my last, because he is BRILLIANT. All in all, one of my favourite audiobooks ever, and I've listened to hundreds.

Excellent continuation of a superb story arc!

Another great instalment to the series. It reads well as a standalone book. Though of course if slots into the ongoing saga of a fascinating future. Thoroughly recommend this whole series! Well read. Great voice changes. And interesting ideas and portrayals of human nature.

"The constellations not just the stars."

John Perry had earned his retirement, and third body, after six years defending the Colonial Union and peacefully farmed on Huckleberry with his ex special forces wife and adopted teenage daughter for eight years. Until he was asked to hear up a colonisation mission to Roanoke. Perhaps the name should have made him suspicious but until it all apparently went wrong it didn't.
I always enjoy John Scalzi's stories: they are witty, bright and pictorial, almost like cartoons but with depth. The banter is good, too, despite the occasional 'he said''she said' repetition (not much in this book) and, as well, the action is often surprising, the characterisation enough to be appealing. And these books are fun.

Narrator William Dufris becomes John Perry, the 88 years old man from Earth whose been through, shall we say, a lot including three bodies as he recounts the events in the first person. Good narration, fun story, recommended

Awesome story, but nerrator need some work

Great story, but.. The nerrator's pauses between paragraphs are a bit too short, and I would have liked more diffrent voices for the characters.

I never expected to say "Positive Dark War Drama"

I'm not sure if that is entirely accurate, but suffice it to say that I loved the story, and how well it was narrated. Especially the way the narrator adjusted his way of speaking to the situations.
