Summary
Ships are sinking for no apparent reason, carrying hundreds to a dark underwater grave. Strange fireballs race through the sky above the deepest trenches of the oceans. Something is about to show itself, something terrible and alien, a force capable of causing global catastrophe.

Better this time
I read this book about forty years ago, and didn’t like it much. Now, post pandemic and with an eco awareness it seems much more prescient. As always with a John Wyndham book, it moves right along and becomes compulsive listening. Even the 1952 touches of anti Soviet rhetoric are once again in vogue. A most thoughtful book, well read and well written. Worth listening to imo.

Wyndham's best, and very well performed.
Excellent story and just as relevant now, 70 years later, for its depiction of conspiracy theories, willful ignoring of facts and political procrastination in the face of a global disaster with more emphasis on "how much money will this cost" than "how many people will this cost".
My only complaint is that Sackville got the readout of longitude and latitude wrong, its degrees, minutes and seconds, not degrees, feet and inches!

Prescient...
Imagine global warming sped up x20, plus a dash of Brexit and you have a feeling of The Kraken Awakes. Chillingly observed and insightful, as are all the best John Wyndham stories.

Brilliant
Really good audio book. Narration and story were excellent. Bit odd that chapter three was a repeat of chapter one, must have been a mistake with the edit.

Great free novel
A great short story from John Wyndham and holds up really well today, only down side is the narrator, he is ok but a lot of voices sound the same and ends most sentences like hes just run out of breath. Odd, other than that would highly recommend.

A good story v well read
Not at all what I was expecting. A story about extraterrestrial invasion as told by a journalist & his wife. Well narrated. Very much enjoyed - good variant of the invasion theme.

fantastic
classic story with excellent narration. BBC dramatisation is better but this is a cheap and cheerful masterpiece

Interesting alternative to War of the Worlds
beautifully written with sensitivity for gender issues unusual for the 1950's. Interesting conceit of a book within a book. Highly recommended.
