Story
As the shadows of World War II gather, the SS Lichenfield is westbound across the Pacific carrying 80,000 barrels of highly explosive naphtha. The cargo alone makes the journey perilous. But yet another sort of peril haunts the Lichenfield. Even beyond their day-to-day existence, the lives of the crew are mysteriously intertwined. Though each has his own history, dreams and jealousies, longing and rage, all are connected by a deadly web of chance and circumstance. Some are desperately fleeing the past; others chase an unknown destiny.
Summary
The fever struck hard and fast, rising out of the slums and claiming victim after victim. At first, reports trickled across the wire in small segments relegated to the final seconds of the broadcast news. Lost among stories of failing economies and political bickering, few noticed what proved to be the birth pangs of a monster. Within months, the disease dominated the news as thousands died and infection rates soared.
William Hill knew his chances of avoiding the virus sat squarely between slim and none. With experts predicting a global pandemic, his choices boiled down to not if, but where he would die. While the rest of the world built barricades and set up distribution points for food, he chose a simpler end. The island had been one of the last and best times with his father. He couldn't think of a better place to spend his final days.
He wanted sun and sand, fresh fish on the grill, and cool nights by the campfire. He wanted feel-good days filled with oldies on the radio, days when he could hoist the sails and run before the wind. He didn't set out to make enemies, but he did. He didn't plan on becoming humanity's last hope for survival, or watching over an old woman and an eerie little boy, either.
To William Hill, the island seemed as good a place as any to die.
He just didn't realize how good.

Good start to what will be an epic adventure
I really liked how this story starts and establishes the characters and plot. The writing style really helped to keep me interested and I really enjoyed the characters. The part I don't like is that this isn't the full story, it is pieces of a larger book. The good news is that there is a full book that you can get so you don't have to buy all the individual pieces. The only reason I give the story 4 stars is for the fact the books were originally piece meal.
I really liked how the book just grabs a hold of you and forces you to keep listening to know what is going on next. They tease you with some information about the fever, perfect setup for those currently dealing with Covid 19. I really liked the characters as they are an unlikely group to try to survive which I believe is heading towards an apocalypse.
Robert Martinez did a really good job with the narration. I liked his character voices a lot, but just his voice alone was excellent. He definitely has a story teller voice and was a huge part of why I liked the book so much.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
